New Computer - Slow Windows Explorer Folder Access

Hi Everyone,

I just got a new system up with the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Asus P5B Deluxe
Corsair TwinX 2GB 800mhz
Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATA HD
eVGA GT7600 Vid

I noticed that when I'm accessing folders in Windows Explorer that sometimes when I click on a folder there would be a 'lag' (maybe 1 sec) before the folder contents would show up - I can hear the 'click' sound generated by windows but then a noticeable lag before the contents are available. This occurs even for folders that have very little contents (maybe a couple files) and I can make it occur if i just keep switching clicks going back and forth between two folders. I ran burn-in tests for 24 hours and also ran the long test of seagate's diagnostic software, but they all passed. Is this normal? Is there some incorrect setting? Or is a particular component (e.g. HD) defective? Any info and/o pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I always have some kind of lag when moving between files in Windows Explorer. What is the view setting you have? Thumbnails? Icons? Details? List? If it's set to thumbnails you either have to enable/disable, I forget which, to stop it from always loading the thumbnail pics everytime you go into a window.

You could also try a defrag.

Even when I WindowButton+E I usually get a couple of seconds lag(sometimes even more, it's too random).

Do you have any kind of network shares/drives? Windows Explorer usually stalls for a few seconds trying to scan the LAN/WAN for network drives and their contents, even if you aren't directly accessing them.

I found out the problem. Something is wrong with the SoundMAX audio drivers. I think the lag is caused when it is trying to produce that "click" when clicking on the folder. Browsing forums a bit, I found that other people have had the same type of problem where the performance degraded after installing those drivers (maybe it's too resource intensive??). Once I disabled the onboard sound, and restored my own pci sound card, everything's fine again. It's just too bad I can't use the onboard sound that came with the motherboard.
