New computer reboots when I shutdown in XP!!

Just built my new computer on Saturday,
ASUS A7V266E
Athlon XP 1800
IBM 60GXP
512 Crucial 2100
Enermax 350W Powersupply

When I first set it up I just did a minimal installation, 1 stick 256 RAM, VisionTek GF3 ti200, hard drive. Installed XP, and everthing was fine. It was able to restart and shutdown with no problems. So I decided to install the rest of my components
Audigy - on PCI slot 4
3COM NIC - on PCI slot 3
the other 256 of RAM

I enabled PnP in the bios (don't do this!), and everything installed fine. That's when the problems occured. Turned off PnP in the bios, that cured the hanging on restart, but when I shutdown, the computer reboots!! So I took out the Audigy and NIC and the other RAM and the problem still occurs!!!

I don't know if the motherboard all of a sudden went bad or the power supply did, or something I need to do to fix this.

Any thoughts appreciated.

More than likely, this is not a hardware issue. What I would do is go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and update your XP. Also, make sure you have that latest motherboard drivers from your MB manufacturor.

I did Windows update also, and also got the latest 4 in 1's for good measure, that didn't cure it.
Any other thoughts???

Sure, again I feel this is a OS issue, not hardware. So what I would do to confirm this, is get a spare HD, (Hopefully you have one) and test a basic install. No peripherals except video. See if it works then. Then one by one install parts till the problem resurfaces.

I ended up reformatting and re-installing XP with just the video card and 1 stick of mem, but the problem still happens. :disgust:

Whenever I shutdown through XP the computer goes through it's motions of turning itself off, but then you hear a *click*, *click*, and it boots back up. I think the click is coming from the power supply.

My friend just suggested that I have the power saving feature turned on in the bios. I'll try that and see if it works.

Anyone else have any ideas?????

That's some juicy info in that article. I wish I were home and not at work so I can try them out!!

Thank God you posted that, cuz I was ready to go get a new power supply and motherboard. hopefully one of the solutions will work out.

None of the tips on that page worked.

I have limited the problem down to USB mice. when I install a ps2 mouse, the computer shutsdown fine. When the USB mouse is hooked up, on either the main 2 headers or the 2 other headers, the problem occurs.

Any solutions or patches available for usb mice (or any usb devices)??? help.
thanks.
