New Computer Problem

Hi everyone,
upon building my new computer, i turned it on.. and after about 2 seconds.... it died... everything just turned off. i turned it on again.. same thing... it keeps dying about 2 seconds. the ps is fine - i tried a new ps and the same thing occurred. any ideas?

We need info....OS, hardware,etc...but as a start, clear the cmos.

Something overloading could be causing the PSU to trip. I've accidentally shorted out my PSU (once, or twice, Ok, maybe more), and it shuts down everything. Works fine after about 5 minutes.

i don't think it's the PSU, i tried the same PSU on another mobo and it works (though at first .. for the first few tries it didn't... i think the mobo might have done something weird to it.. but it works now)...

1gb pc2700 ram

Make sure the Jumper on the Mobo isn't set to Clear CMOS. Alsomake sure the motherboard is on mounted so it doesn't short out on the case. That could be a real problem!

Double check the CPU fan is plugged in, some mobo's won't boot without it.

If there is an extra power connector to the mobo make sure thats plugged in, And if your using a Radeon9700Pro or other power hungry card, make sure the power is plugged into there as well.

Also if there is an onboard DIP switch or jumper for bus speed, or memory speed make sure there at the correct settings. Same with a multiplier DIP ot Jumper for the CPU, might not boot without the proper multiplier.

Just some places to start. Open it up and make sure eveything is hooked up right! Like Master/slave on your HD ect.

I had something very similar happen to me this last weekend while building a computer for a friend. I kept checking connections and could not figure out what the problem was. I finally checked the floppy power connection and I had it in backwards, which evidently kept the system from starting as a fail safe I guess. Anyway, I put the power connector in the right way and no more problems.

If you don't have the CPU fan in the header or it doesn't have an RPM indicator, that will do exactly what you describe.

i tried out everyone's suggestions but they didn't work. i ended up returning the mobo and gettinga new one and it's working fine now. thanks a lot for the help!
