i jut built a new p4 - 2.8c and running the stock hsf and it is not overclocked. it is ~42-44C idle and ~56-58C running prime 95. i thought these temps were high so i took off the hsf, cleaned off the black thermal pad that comes on it and put some of the white heat sink paste on it, but the temps stayed the same. this is antec 835 with 5 80mm case fans and then an additional in the p/s. the front 3 blow and the back 2 blow out. there are 2 optical drives and 2 hdds in it. all cables are the round ones and carefull attention was paid to the layout of wires.

the room this machine is in is ~82F.

please let me know if you think better heat sink paste would benefit.

That's pretty normal temps for the stock intel cooler,if you want colder temps you're have to upgrade the heatsink to something better.

I get about the same temps with my 3.06ghz p4.

I'm using a swiftech heatsink and a 92mm fan, but my case has crappy intake

i want to o/c so what would you recommend for a good hsf, reasonably priced?

What board are you using? Some boards just read higher than others. Those temps are pretty normal, but if you want a really nice hsf I would recommend the Thermalright SP-94.

i found on the intel site that the max is 75C for the 2.8c.

do the coppter hsf that are ~$20-$30 do better than the stock?

My P4 2.8C idles around 39 celcius and goes up to 52 degrees celcius when on full load encoding and gaming.
Don't know if this helps but more info = better :)

do you by any chance know your room temperature? i am trying to figure out if this is a hsf issue or if this is fine based on my computer room temperature.

Not sure the room temp but probably is like 78. My comp is in an antec lanboy case with two fans. one on the front is an intake and one on the back is an outake. Not sure if it helps but once again more info = good :)

bob, your temps are fine for now, but when summer arrives expect your temps to go up a little more. Anything below 65C is acceptable. If you want to lower the cpu temp a few degrees and cut the noise levels, purchase a nice thermalright SP-94 w/ a Panaflo 92mm 12H fan & some Artic Silver 5 or Ceramique.

I have a 2.4 clocked to 3.3 with a SP-94 with a 92MM fan and those temps are just about exactly what I get. I wouldn't worry about it.

it may not be anything to worry about but imho it's higher that it should be

my p4c2.8@3.15 is currently running at 40C with 2 instances of seti (granted, the window is open and it's ~2C outside), still I've never touched 50C with the window closed (it gets pretty warm with 2 comps crunching under a small desk near a heating vent)

I'm using the stock cooler and as5

You should invest in a wall A/C unit. I bought a nice used one from someone in my church. It keeps my room ICE cold year round, the electricity bill is only $10 higher than normal.
