ok i just built my self a new system and now that it is complete and all i try to connect to my wireless network at home and it connects but not really... it says im connected but for some reason its not letting me on the internet at all... in fact it says that my IP adress is unavailable i know there isnt anything wrong with the network because i can acess it from all of the rest of the computers in my house any one out there that can help i would greatly appriciate it

the wireless card is one from an older computer so i know it works

i havent updated my copy of windows yet seeing as i cannot connect to the internet so it isnt even SP1 (i think i can check in a few min)
 
well, "ip address is unavailable" isnt an error message.

So this computer cant access the net, but the other computers on the net can access this new computer. Can those computers access the net? Can this new computer access the other computers?

And please lookup proper use of periods. And what did the hard drive have to do with anything?
 
Well first off its not an error message when it says ip in unavailable it is under my wireless network settings where my ip adress should be it just says IP unavailable. Secondly all of the other computers on my network can acess the net but not the problem computer. Lastly I just reinstalled windows when I rebuilt my computer and I kept all of my old files and settings so I thought that minght have somthing to do with somthing but that dosent matter because I just got fed up with it and reformatted my hard drive.

P.S. sorry if you dont like my typing, it's just that right now im not on my usual computer (stupid different key board) and im a little distraught about the fact that i have 800$ worth of hardware that I cant use for the reason which I intended.
 
On IE, try going to tools,ie options,connections then lan settings button.Make sure the box is checked for automatically detect settings.Hope it fixes it goodluck.
 
windows SHOULD have as a last ditch attempt, given it an ip. My guess is there is something is wrong with the NIC, maybe a driver issue or bad card. Maybe search out an updated driver for it?
 
Is the driver for the Microsoft Wireless card installed in windows? You say this card came from your old system and worked there. I was going to tell you to make sure the windows firewall is off but if you are not even getting an IP I don't think that will help. This part though is important. Are you using WEP Encryption? If so do you have a Hex Password/Paraphrase that your router uses in the settings of the Wireless card and do you have WEP turned on? If WEP and a password is used on the router be sure your machine has WEP enabled and the correct HEX code. Also is the Channel right? Wep has 64 and 128 bit also. Be sure both match.
