New computer now or wait?

With the upcoming of the 64 bit amd cpu later this month do you think it's worth waiting for it and the 64 bit windows xp to come out or will it be at least lets say 6 months before such a technology starts to become useful. I know that nothing will use this as much as it can but I am looking to build a new gaming machine and want to be able to run games for some time and while a new 2500 xp and such will handle it for some time I am wondering if it's worth it to wait for the new processors to become useful. Lets say in your opinions if these won't become useful because of whenever windows xp 64 bit comes around (havn't a clue when it's coming out) or if the new processors will be mainly only for server use for the first few months I will make a new gaming machine using 32 bit processors if these options makes it around 3 months before they become ready to play some half life 2 :)

Currently with my motherboard of soyo dragon plus, 1700 xp, geforce 2 and 256 of pc 2100 crucial ram I am ready to make a new gaming machine but do not wish to just do a few minor upgrades such as adding some more ram and max out the cpu speed the motherboard can use (2100 xp). Would rather spend money on a whole new computer and have most picked out but if these 64 bit processors start to take over soon will hold out till then and upgrade to em.

Sorry for rambling but I need some advice before I go spending my hard earn cash on something that while I know will be not as fast as it can in a few months would rather have something such as the 64 bit motherboard ready for cheaper upgrades.

well, you're definitely going to have to replace that Geforce 2. Why not just spring for a real nice video card now? Even if you decide to put together a 64 bit system, the video card will work, right?

You'd be better off posting this in General Hardware.

That said, how much are you looking to spend? Remember that it will be a while before 64-bit CPUs become affordable, same with the motherboard that run them.

Wait...the 64 bit systems will be overpriced for a while. Wait until prices drop, then think about it. In the meantime, buy a better video card and post things like this in general hardware next time.

I hope you have a lot of money. Athlon 64 processors are going to be way expensive at launch. I suggest you get a good video card now, and an athlon 64+motherboard+ram when the prices drop and the socket is standardized.

His current PC is good enough that with a new videocard he should be good for a while. I'd hold off too.

A better question is, do you do anything that requires that much processing power to justify the price of a new one?

The only problem is the motherboard is only 4x. Are the new 8x video cards backwards compatible so they work in 4x but at the slower speed then they are able to perform? If so might get one maybe 9600 pro and if they are might add 256 more to make game loading faster :p Otherwise will hold out till the new 64 bit cpu's. Otherwise thanks for the help and will probly make my old computer a expensive paper weight or at least a 2nd computer for gaming in case I want a mule in some of the games for storage :)

Not super need for processing power but the main reason is to have a new motherboard to be able to use the newer video cards and faster ram available then my current motherboard can handle.

Keep your current system, upgrade components as needed, when the 64bit stuff comes out wait a bit longer until they hammer out all the first generation stuff then replace your system 8-12 months after they release it.

Ok, with the knowledge they are backwards compatible maybe add a 9600 pro and some more ram otherwise it will work till then. Thanks all.
So much for getting the dfi lan party motherboard and a window case and having the glow light up my room keeping me awake while doing some college homework after playing games for most of the night :p

I also agree with others that reccomended to hold off till the A64 price drops. Your PC sounds good enough as is, just upgrade the vid card and begin the waiting game.
