I was buying parts to eventually build a Core 2 Duo computer when Dell offered a deal on their XPS 700 which I jumped on. Here is what I got:

Pentium D 920
nforce 590 sli chipset
2 x 512mb DDR2-667
2 x 20" 2007wfp
2 x 256mb geforce 7900GS
250gb hdd
16x dvd burner

for $1421

Before I ordered that, I had already purchased:

320gb seagate 7200.10 $90
160gb dell/WD 10,000 $160
2 x 1gb ocz platinum ddr2-800 $165
20.1" viewsonic vx2025wm $250

for a total of: $665

My plan at this point is to put both other hard drives into the XPS. Then swap out the ram. Also, I'm going to replace the Pentium D 920 with a C2D E6600.

That leaves me with:

Pentium D 920 pulled from the XPS
2 x 512mb ram pulled from the XPS
20" viewsonic vx2025wm

With those parts, I want to build my parents a computer. The extent of their usage will probably just be browsing the web and using iTunes to rip/transfer songs to my dad's mp3 player. These are the parts I picked out:

ASUS P5RD2-VM LGA 775 ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $73
Antec Solution Series NSK2400 Black/Silver Steel MicroATX Case 380W ATX12V v2.0 Power Supply $85
80gb WD caviar $43
Lite-On dvd burner $34

for a total of: $258 shipped

-------------------------------------------

In the end, total cost is: 1421 + 665 + 258 = $2344 + whatever an E6600 costs.
Also, part of the Dell deal will include either $250 or $350 (long story) store credit, so that needs to be factored in somehow.

Here is the final result:

Computer 1:
XPS 700 case
nforce 590 sli mobo of unknown brand
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2gb OCZ platinum DDR2-800
Dual 7900GS
250gb hdd of unknown brand
320gb seagate 7200.10
160gb 10k raptor
16x dvd burner
2 20" 2007wfp

Computer 2:
Antec MicroATX desktop case
Asus P5RD2-VM mobo with onboard sound and video
Pentium D 920
1gb ram of unknown brand
80gb 7200rpm WD800JD
16x dvd burner
20" viewsonic vx2025wm

$250 or $350 in Dell store credit

-------------------------------------------

Total: $2344 + $350 (~ for E6600) - $300 (average of what I might get back from Dell) = $2294

Keyboards, mice, and speakers are taken care of.

I need to buy some sort of HS/fan for the pentium d that will fit in that case. Ideas?

What do you guys think? Any input on anything I posted would be appreciated. I haven't received the XPS yet, nor have I ordered those parts I linked to, so I can still make changes. I cannot alter my Dell order, but I can cancel it if there's some way to spend the same amount of money and still come out with two similar or better performing computers at the same or better price. Sorry about the length. Thank you if you read it all.

I would have to say something along the lines of a Zalman 7700Cu.

Thank you, Ayah.

I preordered an E6600 at monarch for $349 shipped. That brings the total to $2693. That seems like a freakin lot for a pretty good computer and a mediocre one. Do you guys agree? How about with the ~$300 in Dell credit, does it all seem worth it? Any input on anything would be great. I'm itching to order the rest of the parts.

Edit: I suppose it's not that much considering ~$1000 worth of monitors is bundled in there. A little confirmation would be nice though :).
