new computer just built: floppy failure, CPU temp @ 58 while idle in BIOS

just built my new comp, i'm getting the following floppy error at boot screen:

Floppy disk fail (40)one

What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Also, my CPU temp is at 58 while idling in BIOS. Doesn't that seem high?

EDIT: Oh nevermind, I think I had the cable upside down. If I don't post in this thread again that was the problem. 🙂

Going to try now.

Specs? Are you overclocking? Are you using stock cooling? Are you sure you made a good layer of thermal compound? I will asume that temp is Celsius and venture to say that seems a little high. Even a Prescott shouldn't idle that hot on stock settings... Check the thermal paste and is the heatsink is seated properly. Make sur the fan is blowing ON the heatsik (down towards it).

BTW, how do you get a floppy cable in backwards? I thought they were notched...

MSI RS480M2 Motherboard
Athlon 64 3200+
WD Raptor 74GB 10,000 RPM
PQI 1GB RAM
ATI Radeon X800 XL 256MB PCI-e

No, not overclocking. Yes, stock cooling and stock thermal pad.

The floppy cable was upside down, I turned it around and it works perfectly now. The cable is notched but the drive is notched on the top and bottom so you can put it in either way...

Foppy drives are annoying like that. You just have to line up the red wire on the cable with the arrow/notch on one side of the floppy drive connector.

After running your comp for 5 - 10 minutes, feel the cpu heatsink, let us know if it is cool/warm/hot.

The computer has been running for a good couple of hours now. I just touched the heatsink and it actually felt coolish to my hand.

Maybe the BIOS temperature reading is off?

my readings are WAY off with my ABIT AV8 motherboard..

If your idle temp is 58c and your heatsink feels cool..then the problem is most likely that the heatsink isn't making good contact with the cpu..at 58c it shouldn't feel cool..

OK, I removed the thermal pad using 70% rubbing alcohol and replaced it with Arctic Silver 5. I booted up the machine and went straight into BIOS to check the temperature. Already the temperature reading was at 51C. Right now in Windows I'm at 48C according to SpeedFan.

Doesn't it seem odd that a cold processor would be at 51C seconds after turning on?

Also, a little off the subject but I noticed that my video card fan is blowing away from the card. In other words, it's "sucking" air from the video card processor. Is that normal?

If your room temp is under 25C, and your BIOS settings are at DEFAULT, then the CPU temp should be less than 35C immediately after a cold start. I'm assuming that the CPU heatsink is properly attached.

The motherboard is probably reporting a higher temp.

I can say that switching to the Arctic Silver 5 dropped the temp by at least 10C. I played BF2 for a good couple of hours and the temp never went above 56C, averaging about 54C.

Idling averages at 48C.

I really didn't think the thermal compound would make that much of a difference but apparently it does.
