New computer issue -- file transfers

I've built a new computer and am having trouble with transferring files via an external harddrive. OS is XP SP2, mb is an Asus A8R32-MVP Delux with an AMD64 4000+ cpu, 2 gig ram. What happens is that the files I want to transfer go fine for a few minutes from the ext. hd to the new comp, but then they stop or begin to transfer VERY VERY slowly. It's as if the new comp decides it doesn't want to do this anymore and becomes totally uncoperative. I have to reboot and the same thing happens again. If I try to do say 5mgs at a time, then it will transfer them a few times and stop again. Is this some cache or mb setting? Any ideas? Otherwise the computer seems fine.

The new hd comes up as UDMA Mode 5 so that should be ok. The external transfering hard drive comes up as optimized for quick removal rather than performance. Maybe that's it?
