I'm having a problem with the new computer I built...when I power it up the bios won't start up...plus there are no beeps. Anyone know what I've done wrong or need to check out? Thanks in advance

Did you connect both the atx 20 pin connector and 4 pin 12v connector? Also, try removing the board from the case, and placing it on the box it came in. Then, use one stick of memory, cpu/heatsink, and video, and it should post. You can connect the power switch lead off the front of the case, or short it with a standard screwdriver to get it to power up.

Did you ground the pc and use a wrist strap when putting the unit together? Use an old power strip with the switch turned off (make sure you are not plugged into the constant on plug on the strip). Plug the pc into this strip to ground the box. When you are handling individual components (esp. memory stick), use a wrist strap and connect the clipped end to the grounded pc case.

Once grounded do the following:

1. Remove all your add on cards (graphics & sound, etc..) and place them in the anti-static bags they came in.

2. Disconnect your hard drive(s), cd rom and floppy drives on the motherboard end.

3. Remove all your memory sticks (make sure you are grounded & touch the power supply or metal on the case before you touch the memory sticks) and place each one in its own anti-static bag.

Note: It is best if you remove the MB from the case and place it on an anti-static bag next tothe case. To do this you need to purchase a power supply 20 pin (and the P4 4 pin) extender from PC Power & Cooling. The next best thing is to remove the mb to make sure nothing is shorting out the system (a loose screw, etc).

4. Turn the power strip switch to the on position and power up the pc. You should hear a series of beeps (the # of beeps depends upon your mb/bios mfgs. beep code meanings). If you hear beeps, it's most likely the bios telling you it can't find the memory modules (it could be the processor, again look up the beep codes).

5. If you get the beeps, turn the powerstrip off, ground yourself and reinstall the first memory stick in bank 0 (check your mb manual to id the slots). Power up again to see if the beeps go away. If you get a single beep, then bios found the memory. If not, place memory stick 2 in bank 0 and repeat the process. If you have a known good memory stick (ie it works in another pc) that is compatiable with your new MB, use it. You need to try the memory stick in every slot to rule out a faulty memory bank.

6. If you get a single beep on boot up, shut down and turn off the powerstrip switch. Maintaining ground, reinstall your graphics card (I am assuming you don't have graphics on a chip on the MB). Connect up the monitor and turn it on. Power up again and see if the bios post messages appear. If they do, you can enter bios setup by pressing a key (this depends on the bios brand. f2 and del keys are common.

If all troubleshooting attempts fail, contact the reseller or manufacture for authorization to return the board. I had two boards in the course of two months that failed to boot into bios setup out of the box. Things happen.

I usually stick with Intel brand boards. What I like is the three year warranty. I called for tech support on one of their boards. They failed to get the board up and running for me, so the call was free. They replaced the board with a good one without a problem. Their boards may not have the hottest, cutting edge features, but they are stable.

Good luck,
Nick
