I just build this system last night at a friends house. Vista 32bit, 4g ram 4850, 540g hd.

My heatset works perfectly fine but my speakers wont work at all, I have the line in from the sub plugged into the line out but no go.

Not a compatibility problem with analog output. Did you plug your headset into the same line out jack or a front panel connector? Front panel connector enabled might disable the rear line out jack.

i plugged the headphones in the front and they worked there, then i plugged them into the back where the speakers were plugged in and they didnt work there.

You probably have a choice of either using the front panel audio connector or the rear one. Only one can be enabled at a time.

you guys were right, i can only use the front and not the rear. kinda annoying that I only have that option, was hoping i could had the speakers plugged in and if i wanted to use headphones i could just plug those in and the speakers would shut off.

there may be a driver update for the onbaord audio chipset to allow you to make the plugs hot swappable and maybe allow the ability you seek. I'd keep checking on them.

Easy solution is speakers with a headphone jack. All but the cheapest speakers cut out the speakers out when you insert a headphone plug.

If the front jacks don't have a physical device to allow detection of a connection (whether an internal prong acting as a switch, or a circuit designed to electrically detect the presence of a plug), I doubt there will ever be a driver solution.
