this is the build im looking at:

e2140 cpu
patriot extreme performance ddr2 800 2 gigs
apevia 500 watt psu
evga 7600gt
rosewill r604-p case

im cannibalizing the hard disk and optical drives from my current rig.

the motherboards im considering are:

P35
biostar tforce tp35d2-a7 $105
abit ip35-e $120
gigabyte ga-p35-ds3r $130

650i ultra
evga 122-ck-nf66-t1 $97

all are good overclockers, all are compatible with intels penryn. although the 650i would allegedly require a bios flash.

out of the above what would be the best bang for the buck?

IMHO, evga 650i - definitely the most economical performer.

Otherwise abit - great reviews.

650i is good, but you'll need to cool the NB and SB if you plan to overclock. The stock configuration runs HOT! There are also un-confirmed report about the inability to run four sticks of RAM.

the ram issue doesn't really effect me too much as i dont plan on using xp for a while anyway, and hopefully they can get it sorted out in a further bios revision.
