This is pretty weird. I am building a rig for my dad with the follwing hardware:

Athlon64 3000+ (retail with fan)
DFI Lanparty UT NF3 250G
512 MB pc3200 DDR Kingston valueram
120 GB Seagate HD
ATI Radeon 9600XT
NEC 3520A DVD writer
Liteon 16X DVD-ROM
generic floppy (mad-dog)
generic modem (best data v.92)
antec sonata case with antec 380W PSU

I hooked everything up and put the XP disc in the NEC drive. It formatted the HD, installed XP, and everthing was OK. I then used the drivers from the DFI CD to utilize on-board audio, ethernet, USB and Firewire. I d/l and installed SP2. I started adding software. I added all the other parts like printer and scanner to make sure that they were functioning. Everything went very well - too well.

After I had all the software and drivers installed I ran memtest86 for 10 passes without incident (no errors). Last night I d/l and ran prime95. It started to run so I left it because I wanted to run it over night and see if the system was stable. I woke up this morning with a black screen stating the windows couldn't load and the message, "load needed DLLs for HAL".

I rebooted and got the same message. I tried to boot into safe mode but I got the message, "\windows\system32\config\system is either missing or corrupt". So I hauled out the XP disc again to see if I could fix it. When I boot I get to the "setup is inspecting your hardware configuration..." Then it goes to the blue screen that asks first to press f6 if installing SCSI or RAID drivers then asks to press f2 to run automated sytem recovery. If I don't press anything, the system hangs. If I press f2 it asks for the automated system recovery disc which I don't have.

I have another unformatted 120 GB WD HD laying around to see if I could install that and get it working. So I unplugged everything like printer, ethernet, USB stuff. I get the same as above. It hangs at the windows setup screen. I can't even change the numlock on the keyboard. It is really frustrating because I wouldn't mind re-loading all the software again but I can't even format the new hard drive

I didn't really mess with the BIOS (just changed time/date - maybe some other things but no voltage or timing changes). The BIOS recognizes the hard drive, 2 DVD drives, floppy, CPU, and RAM.

what could the problem be? Do you think something on the mobo has fried?

Any/all help would be greatly appreciated.

I may just send the mobo back to newegg but is there any way to test what may be causing the problem

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to look at that. Right now I can't even get into the BIOS!! It just stops at the Lanparty logo. I think I'm going to RMA the board
