So my motherboard quit on my so it's time for a rebuild . . . if I have Windows XP OEM and I rebuild the motherboard and CPU can I use that version or will I be forced to buy a new one . . . I'm pretty sure I'll need to buy a new one which is not in my budget and will not make the wife happy.

I didn't want to purchase Vista, I wanted to wait until Windows 7 came out.

Doh.

Motherboard failures are a qualified situation in which you're allowed to move to another "computer" (where MS defines the computer as the mobo). Technically you're supposed to replace it with an exact part if possible, but with a computer that old it's reasonable to assume that a proper replacement wouldn't be possible.

So you should be able to call MS and get reactivated on your new computer.
