New computer big problem

I've got a newly-completed i5 based machine with an MSI board, powered by a Thermaltake PSU. All parts new last night. It ran overnight and all morning today. No overclock, all is at factory settings.

Just now I shut it down to recheck Bios settings but I did not change anything. On restart, the machine now won't come up. The fans and lights start for 1/2 second then all stops.

I've pulled the 24-pin connector off the board & reseated it. That got it started again. I went into Setup and let it run for a few minutes. Then I shut it down & tried to restart and got the same prob. This time reseating the power connectors (both) had no effect.

Suggestions greatly appreciated. PSU bad, or motherboard?

^ Ha ha kind of similar problem to mine, but it's old system. I get the same symptom as yours. I have to turn the PSU switch off for about 3 minutes and then turn it back on. Have u tried that? I can let the system run for days without fail. I can restart no problem except for shutting down. I don't have the fix to my problem yet.

My first impression is it's a bad board. Do you have another PSU you could test with to confirm?

I was hesitant to try the only other PSU that I had in the shop 'cause it's a 300W. But it did start the computer. I took the Thermaltake PSU out & then tried to get it all to work outside the case. Got frustrated with cabling (you know the thick Thermaltake cables are hard to move around) and just put it back together in the case again. It surprised me, it lit right up first try.

But then it shut itself off as soon as it got into Windows. I'm going to take back the PSU and try again. I was trying to avoid doing this 'cause it's a whole hour out of my day, in mid-day. But I need to deliver this machine tomorrow so no time to putz around.

If it turns out to be the MB after all this then I'll be late getting it to the cust. but I guess some things can't be changed/avoided.
