New Computer after 6 Years (Please Give Opinion)

Hello,

I'm new to these boards, but was referenced to them by a friend at school. I currently have a P4 1.6 Ghz with 512 MB Ram, Geforce 2 Mx 400, and an old ASUS motherboard. Being new to building computers (my dad built the old one with help from a friend), I hope to create a decent gaming/general use computer for myself and my family with about a $1000 budget. This is my build so far: http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wis...WishListTitle=New%20Computer%20Upgrade

Please tell me what you think/ advice/opinions?

Thank you

I also forgot:

My old computer is in a basic white desktop ATX case. I didn't include the floppy or storage/hard drives or monitor because I plan to use those from my old computer. Also, I was wondering if any additional power supply units are needed in addition to the one provided with the case (it is a desktop ATX with 350W from Cooler Master). And for USB, will I need to buy any extra accessories, or is the USB already included on the motherboard for easy access? I'm sorry that I am asking some of these possibly noob questions but this is my first ever experience with building computers, and I am using what I have read/know to give this initial build. If there are any other things that can be suggested to be fixed/added/removed please comment.

What is the current HD you're going to use? If it's pretty old, you might get a big speed boost from a new one, and they can be pretty cheap these days.

if your case has front usb, you connect these to the motherboard, most of the time no extra accessories are needed. the motherboard comes with most of the internal cables you'll need, and the case will come with extra screws and what not.

You should really have a PS with a 24 pin connector with that Board/CPU/VidCard.

As was asked by an earlier poster, the amperage on the +12V rail is pretty important. Don't see any PS specs with the PS in that case.

Also as mentioned earlier, I second a newer HD. You could pick one up locally with rebates for super cheap.

Are you sure you're going to be happy with beige drives in that case?

Between the USB ports built into the board and the ones in the case, you'll have USB aplenty.

Alritey, thanks for that information boomerang.

I've decided to switch to a black optical drive for better looks on that case. I'm sticking with the same case, but I think i may need a better power supply. If so, are there any ones that are compatible with my build that you can recommend? And, will i be able to remove the original PSU from the case to put in a newer, better PSU with +12V Rail, etc.?

Oh, and about the hard drives, my dad works for Western Digital, and he can give me the "hook up". =D

Lucky him. I work for Seagate and it's cheaper for me to buy my Seagate drives when there is a nice fat rebate at Fry's than it is for me to use the company purchase plans.

Just one question I know it's off the Op's topic but would you be able to change the fan in that XClio PSU to a Red LED one?

You most likely could. But, I wouldn't recommend it without someone present who has experience with such things. It's possible to get a severe shock if you touch the wrong components.

Edit: The PS swap is as simple as removing and replacing four screws.

One last question:

Will I be able to replace the power supply that comes with the desktop case with the XClio power supply, because the XClio will give me the 12V, while the original desktop case PSU may not provide enough power?

Oh yes. They are standardized.

I just looked at your case and the new PS. I was concerned that there might be interference between the fan grill on the PS and the Case Fan. Looks as though there will be no problem.
