i've just started looking for a laptop and came across this new model from compaq/hp. the most attractive feature on this laptop is the 14'' wxga and weight (5.2lbs). i dont want a 15.4'' wxga as those tend to be a bit bulky for my taste, but i haven't found any other 14'' wxga laptops except for this one (correct me if i'm wrong). the 700m's 12'' wxga is sexy but too small. the biggest drawback may be the igp, but i figure i won't be gaming much and won't need to capability to away from my desktop so it works for my purposes.

in any case, no reviews on it yet, but in case there are others interested or you have more info, please update us here. the brother model, hp dv1000, has had a few reviews which seem good, but costs about $150 more. however, it does have the capability to play dvds/cd mp3s without booting into windows. if you have anything else to share, let it be known!

edit: here ya go evan.

Hp does do student discounts. I got a dv1000 down by that much after realizing that my school qualified.

Could we add the dv 1000 to the subject line of this thread?

yea student discount is good. i'm just hesitant about jumping on this at its initial release. maybe wait until christmas when prices are hopefully lower and some bugs are worked out. but if anybody wants to be the guinea pig, be our guest

dv1000 is also 1lb lighter, has IGP, about an inch smaller on all sides (unconfirmed). oh, and 1'' smaller wxga display. i used to really like the x1000 but the footprint is really too big for me. then again, i haven't held the dv1000 or v2000 is person so i'm not really sure how they compare in reality.

Its really unfortunate that neither of these comes with a better graphics card... They are hot looking laptops, but IGP? Yuck. I don't get it - I'd be happier with a Geforce4 Go, and that can't possibly bump the price up too much.

so rossman, you really set on the dv1000 like you said in another thread? i like the standalone dvd/cd playback feature and the *two* headphone out jacks and the remote option.... but the color of the v2000 is really growing on me. my gf likes the black tho... what to do, what to do.

I believe the dv1000 black is cool. HOWEVER, the screen section I believe is silver :( I was hoping for that IBM brick look. with the v2000 I'm not sure if it is silver or white or what?

I prefer Compaq but I'm not crazy about the grey keyboard color scheme. I wish it had some dedicated video card (even my 2 year old Compaq 1500T has 32MB Radeon 7500 and it's 2 YEARS OLD!!!).

I'm waiting for this year's Black Friday to see if any super molten lava hot laptop deals come around.

I agree. I am getting a new notebook and wanted a smaller unit like these, and my wife gets an APP discount for her school. If it had at least a Radeon 9000, I'd probably jump on it.

"In addition to accessing DVD or CDs you can also access music stored on the units hard drive..."

this is HOT, IMO. for $150 more, i have a portable dvd player and a replacement for my zen! well, major size difference, but if i'm going to be carrying a laptop around anyway, at least i won't be missing my zen for mp3s. they really should have implemented quickplay on the compaq too, ugh. or at least give us another color scheme for the dv.

i would have to say that the compaq is white or a very close silver except for a greyish/silver keyboard and a dark grey exterior. the HP is definitely NOT white (rather, black) with a silver exterior and black/blue lettering keyboard.

i haven't come across any battery benchmarks, but for the pentium-m, my guess is around 4 hours (a little less for the celeron-m--see tomshardware for an excellent comparison between pentium-m and celeron-m).

cnet has betery benchmarks:
Battery life [--] BAPCo MobileMark 2002 battery life in minutes
HP Pavilion dv1000 -- 246
Sony VAIO VGN-A190 -- 163
Dell Inspiron 700m -- 144

Running a 10.8V, 4,400mAh (48WHr) battery, the Pavilion dv1000 lasted more than four hours in our office and content-creation tests

so should be 6 cell?

I'm not sure if the 700m was using a bigger battery as dell does offer.

No matter it is significant, double the dell battery and the HP still competes.

Is there any way to get the Compaq with the remote?
