PI Bought a new Compaq Presario R3240US this weekend and its great. Turned it off yesterday mornign and when I got home last night I went to turn it on and nothing happened. I press the power button and the power light on the front comes on for 3-4 seconds and then goes off and the computer never does anything. Compaq support was pretty much no help. One tech says its the power cord (TH eAC adaptor light is on and Green) and another says its its the hard drive. Hard to believe it would have died in less than 24 hours with no warning. Any thoughts?

it definately isn't the hdd. if it was, then the computer would at least power on and give you a harddisk error. sounds like your PSU took a crap. was it storming the night you turned it off? do you have it plugged straight into the wall or are you going through a surge protector?

Get Compaq to fix it, surely it's under warranty still?

Compaq is sending me a new A/C Adaptor and HD. It just sucks that it only took 24 hours for the thing to break.

It was not storming the last time i powered it down and I've had it plugged in both through a wall socket and through a surge protector.

You just got a lemon. It happens with appliances, cars, electronics, you name it.

Back in 1997 when I bought a PC and a extended warranty from Best Buy (I know but I was new to PC's then), my $2000.00 "baby" died on day 18.

I take it back to them and just want to exchange it. Manager says no way we only offer exchanges on computers for 15 days. They then mail it in to get worked on and I don't see it again for 2 and 1/2 months.

Really was my last big purchase at Best Buy. I will only buy small ticket items from them now (DVD's, CD's, etc.).
