New compaq computer question

I have a friend that just purchased a new compaq computer with a XP3200+. After installing Sandrasoft I noticed that on the MB description it said that the MAX FSB was of 166mhz, and MAX MEM was 200mhz. I am assuming that the chipset is a VIA400. When I look at the PCI/AGP frequencies they are at 40mhz PCI and 80Mhz AGP. Is this correct? Would Compaq sell a system that is obviously already set behond its capacity? In the notices Sandra is stating that the FSB/MEM frequencies are set to high, and suggest that they be lowered.

Well, that sounds fuzted up to the max.

Before i freaked I'd run some other proggies to make Sandra was correct. Try aida32, belarc advisor (should show mobo chipset) and wcpuid for the cpu data. These are all free d/l, Just google 'em.

You prolly already know that PCI/AGP s/b 33/66. So something is wrong here too. Hopefully it's Sandra.

If Sandra is reporting correctly, you can fix this stuff if you find out the chipset and get hold of a manual. But I'd just sent the pc back as unacceptible.

yes, because Compaq totally blows in every way.

If you can set those back to what they're supposed to be, do it.

Then reformat and reinstall Windows from your *own* CD, to get rid of their proprietary crap software that just slows the computer down.

Then fill the computer with gunpowder, set it on fire, and put it on the doorstep of Compaq headquarters.

pretty harsh, but that is what he gets. Yes the PCI/AGP at 40mhz/80mhz are correct. The VIA400 does not have the correct dividers for a 200mhz fsb, and will only run those CPU's with the chipset overclocked since it does not have a PCI/AGP lock. I plugged in a 2600+ Barton (166fsb) and all is normal 33mhz/66mhz for the PCI/AGP which blows. If I lower the FSB to 166 then it boots as a 2500+ which defeats the purpose of getting a 3200+. Anyways I traded the 3200+ (200fsb) for a 3000+ (166fsb) I had, and all is good. Hey, I just got a 3200+ that runs 225x11 (2475mhz) at 1.65v so I am not complaining .

Your running that in your VIA KM 400 Compaq? Might I venture a guess as to how you overclocked the chip in an OEM Compaq bios?
