Ive obtained a new position as head of IT and I am about to make decide on a HP desk and Laptop standard for the company. Im looking at ideas of what other shops are using as their standard. I came from a Dell Optiplex (745) and Latitude (630) shop and I am looking for something of the equivalent.

I will be calling HP tomorrow but my experience is they will tell you anything to get you to buy their product.

Thanks,

So are you stuck to HP? I'd go dell desktop/thinkpad laptops if it was up to me. You need core 2 duo/2gb memory, 200-300 gb hard drive space.

I like the Dell line myself. Very reliable and not very expensive. Does your company
insist on using HP for their computers ? ? The quality of HP should be ok but they
will likely cost more than the Dells .. and Dell makes good servers if you need it.

HP is as good as Dell or better, and any potential upgrades are much, MUCH simpler, since they are using the off-the-shelf components, as opposed to proprietory by Dell.

Just my 2 cents...

What kind of company is it...? What is going to be done on these computers...?

Auto CAD...? Modelling...? Structural calculations like MathCAD or RAM Structural System? Do you require a professional Video Card...? Will you use Photoshop or similar...?

More information, please...

Probably need a wee bit more info about the size of the organization and an idea what you do, the desktop environment, software & data storage needs, existing infrastructure, etc. . . .

My company bounces back and forth between HP and Dells with their yearly purchases. The HP's seem to have less problems. Some of our higher end (xeons) Dell workstations were frying hard drives because they were getting too hot.

The computers will not need anything overly powerful although a few people will be using photoshop, those I will address with a workstation PC if I feel the need. But mostly just Office, Quick Books on some. We are creating a budget at this point so nothing has been set in stone. Im hoping for 750-1k per box. Laptop 1500 or so with docking stations. LCD Monitors are not included in these figures but if they are then that would be great! I was told HP this,"HP Client Configuration Manager" feature for remote support so I would like to stay in the model range that has this feature as well.

Proprietary what? When you buy the Gold tech support there's a 3 year warranty anyway. Parts go bad and you get them replaced overnight. Their systems support any expansion card whether low profile or standard.

When I was in the USAF we had Dell for the longest time, started out with Optiplex GX1 workstations in fact. After the GX270s they went to HP. I remember trying to get an old TNT2 video card to work in the HP so I could have dual monitor support. No matter what I tried or what HP tech support told me to do it wouldn't work...even though the TNT2 worked fine in the GX270. In the end the HP tech support told me if it wasn't HP they wouldn't support it.

As a civilian at my current company we have Dell Optiplex GX520 and 745 workstations. I don't have any problem with them and through the Dell online chat support I don't have to wait and get parts with very little resistance from the Dell tech, unlike HP's support.

I personally dislike HP/Compaq quite a bit and would never recommend them over Dell.
