New Comp - Won't Read Second HD

I just got a cheap refurbed Essentio CM5570 machine because believe it or not my other computer was an even bigger pile. I moved my secondary HD over to it, which is a 300GB Seagate w/ an IDE connection. Fired it up...it's not reading the Seagate HD.

The mobo is a P5QL-VM EPU, and it only has one IDE slot (the primary HD is SATA, obviously). I've tried no jumper on the IDE Seagate (cable select) and tried both connectors on the IDE cable. No dice. I've tried setting the jumper to Master and it still won't read from either connection. On the HD it doesn't show a jumper position for Slave.

I've looked in the BIOS and it's not even recognizing it at that level. I don't see anything in the menus as far as enabling the IDE slot on the board or something, granted I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. The OS is Vista Home Premium, if that matters.

Any thoughts or ideas on what this could be?

It's possible, but I couldn't find anything. There was an option for "Sata Configuration" with the options of "Enhanced" (which it was set to), something to do with IDE, and Disabled. I tried all of them to no avail.

Your sata emulation mode won't matter here. That purely controls the ability of the drive (or interface rather) to support AHCI (advanced host controller interface) functions such as NCQ (native command queuing).

Does another IDE get recognized when you plug it in?

Thanks for the tip.

I have only tried one cable, which was plugged in and working no more than 10 minutes before the swap. Because the case is not big and not really made for modification, the layout is a complete PITA to deal with even if just changing which connector on the cable is used. (I have to take both hard drives out in order to move cables to get as connections etc.)

I realize it's troubleshooting 101 to try another cable, but I was really hoping I could avoid digging around in there more than I have to. I'll try the IDE from my main drive on my old computer. Hopefully that's as far as I have to go and it just works.

I'll be back later tonight with results...
