Ok, so I'm building a computer for my friend, and I got all the parts yesterday and started putting it together. Everything was going fine, until it came to installing windows...

I loaded the windows cd as normal, and it went through that blue screen where u format the HD and it copies installation files. Then it restarted as usual...but the first time it passed the windows splash screen, but then froze (though I was still able to move the mouse) once it passed the splash screen. So i restarted, and now it won't even pass the splash screen (where that blue line goes back and forth)...it just freezes.

I haven't overclocked the computer or anything...just all default for right now. what am I doing wrong?

Here are the parts that I used for the comp:

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2400+, 266FSB, 512K Cache, 45 Watt- OEM
http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=19-103-400&depa=0

BIOSTAR "M7NCG 400" nForce2 IGP Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU
http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=13-138-234&depa=0

Kingmax 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-2700 - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=20-156-005&depa=0

ZALMAN CNPS3100-Plus Copper CPU Cooler for Socket 462/ A/ 370
http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=35-118-102&depa=0

I checked the CPU temp, and it's stable around 84 degree farenheit...i don't think that's too high, is it?

Please help. It'd be a shame if I can't get the comp up and running for a while :(

BTW...I'm using his existing 20gig HD...but I don't think that would pose a problem...

BIOSTAR "M7NCG 400" these have issues recognizing mobile XP procs but most likely isn't all of your trouble..check your bios for info..gl..

Works great with even the Mobile AthlonXP CPU's. I'm running my 2400 mobile with no problems at 1.83Ghz, 166Mhz bus speed, and CPU core voltage of 1.5 volts.

well this guy got it up and running...i have not changed any of the default variables on the motherboard but i will do that next chance i get.

i doubt it could be the RAM, cuz I wouldn't even have gotten to the beginning of the installation process if it was the RAM, right?

Most mobo don't recognize the mobile. The mobile chip is intended for lappies, so desktop mobo's are NOT intended to auto recognize them. It's totally normal. Some desktop mobo's now offer new/modded BIOS which will do so, however.

BEFORE loading windoze, you s/h gone into the BIOS to set up for the cpu. It's prolly running at 600mhz (FSB 100 x 6 multi) or something slow like that.

Go into BIOS, set FSB for cpu @ 166, maybe start with a multi of 10, then go up if stable. I'd guess vcore s/b set to 1.45. But you can google the cpu and confirm. Or just start with 166 X 11 @ 1.5vcore like the other poster is using. But I prefer to start lower, to make sure everything is stable when I install the OS, so its not fouled up. Then after installing OS, install P95 to test any "OC". I'd reinstall the OS too.

Too bad you got pc2700 (@ FSB 166) ram. The mobile cpu will likely run at FSB 200 X11 multi (3200+ speeds) w/o a prob. The mobo will handle it to.

well when i installed i just did the quick format (i know i know) and the problem is still here. but i'm going to fdisk it and then go from there. wish me luck :)

btw, system running at a stable 85 degrees fareheit with only 2 fans (side of case and the one over the cpu)

well, i finally got the computer to run stable and not crash on me. but to do this i had to do a lot of changes to the bios, as well as flash the bios.

first i did the flash for the "memory compatability issue", since a lot of times i was getting a dump error, which lead me to believe it was the ram. well, that didn't solve anything, so i did the update for the source code, and that didn't solve anything either. finally i did the updates for the amd sempron and amd sempron mode 8 and mode 10 cpu. i'm not sure what athlon xp 2400 is, but i got it working. but i also had to make a lot of switches in the bios

from the experience so far...i dunno. i'm still not sure who the main culprit is, since i had to disable the video shadow functions and all that good stuff. i'll post more details tomorrow as i am tired as hell right now. but on the positive side, this bios allows for some serious overclocking potential. hell, it even talks about overclocking. so all-in-all, i guess it is a good mobo.

only thing that i'm not sure of, besides what all i can and cannot disable, is the T settings for the RAM. but again, i'll wait till the morning.

goodnight all. i think i deserve this sleep after battling with this f00kin thing for quiet a while now
