New citizens will be expected to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen, make a pledge of loyalty to the UK's "rights, freedoms and democratic values", and sing God Save the Queen.

I don't recall singing that. They just had a highschool band come in, and some girl sang the anthem.

You don't have to sing the National Anthem.

You do have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance though.

No, just take a test and take the Pledge of Allegiance.

No, just take a test and take the Pledge of Allegiance.

The test is very difficult and includes differential calculus and quantum physics.

No we don't. I would say "fvck you" and move to Canada if they tried to make me learn that terrible anthem.

So, what exactly is the role of the Queen (and Royal Family)
I know the Royal Family owns lots of land, donate to lots of charities, and make fools out of themselves whenever possible.

She doesn't have any input in the running of the country does she?

Don't forget that you must memorize the entire human genome.

Ironically enough, that's not too far from the truth. Unless you're sponsored by someone else already here, and you have a damn good reason to come(marriage, etc), the US gov't doesn't really want you unless you're a genius.

Yeah dude, the question "How many states are there in the US" took me Calc III level Calculus to figure out. I was still off, but the guy was cool, so he let me go.

I wonder what would happen if you went in there and sang the Sex Pistol's version of God Save the Queen. :D

Her role is basically ceremonial I think...

You're kidding right, Virtueixi? That test is as easy as ABC. All it takes is to print sample tests and memorise the answers. Everyone . . . even those bad in history or don't know indepth analysis of the US History and Government pass that test.

What's the big deal (re. the national anthem)? I would take it at anytime if I were offered free citizenship. The article is so vague, to the extent that there's no explanation of the objections. I would like to know why it's a big deal to anyone.

Why do you have "and sing God Save the Queen" bolded, Yellowfiero? Are you worried that it's demeaning to have people sing, whereas their voices make them cringe? Are you unhappy that there's "God" or "save the Queen" there? You do know that the Queen is the Head of State, I suppose. . . .
