New chip on the way, do I need to reinstall OS??

My new 1800 should be here within the hour, do I need to reinstall the OS for just a chip upgrade?? I know that you should for a mobo change but can't remember for just a chip

Nope, there really is no need... I have done that many times, and in fact I've even done motherboard changes without reinstalls with no problems--it redetects a bunch of hardware but otherwise it's fine.

I went to AMD tech seminar a few months ago and I remember the AMD rep said you'll need to reintall the OS for it to recognize and utilize the new instructions in AthlonXP processor.

but say he goes from a XP 1400 to a 2000, i don think he needs to reinstall.

maybe if he went from a Tbird to a XP or any penitum to any AMD.

If only the CPU, no you should be able to plug it in and run with your faster CPU! 🙂 Only if you are changing chipsets like motherboards will you run into problems. But, sometimes you can be able to get away with switching same brands, ie: asus to asus or aopen to aopen chipsets and just re-install the native OS drivers, and update your motherboard drivers afterwards.
