This sounds like a good deal. I used to have Charter in Miami Beach and while I paid a lot of money, I did get just about every channel they offered. I thought I hated Charter but then I moved and now I know that I hate Comcast.

How do you ask for this promotion? I just called them and they said they never heard of such a thing... Also if anyone knows, when you sign up for Charter, is the first month free or not (for trial run)?

Here in the Midwest (WI) Charter is running a special, 1st, 4th, and 7th months free on their 2mb down/ 256kb up service @ $39.99/month. Modem rental is free w/ the 2mb service. Charter here no longer has the silver, gold, and platinum services anymore just 786kb down/ 128 up($29.99) and 2mb down/ 256kb up.

I joined up w/ Charter three years ago when they first offered broadband here and stuck with them for over two years. Man did they suck!! I went to SBC DSL and they suck worse. I saw the Charter promo and had nothing to lose.

Tell ya what, Charter has improved greatly here in 8 months!!

Where are you getting these deals from Maddscientist. I just called Charter (I am a dish customer, trying to switch over to cable because of the local channels) and they pretty much said what the he#@$@# are you talking about? There is no such thing, maybe depends on area or something. If you have more information, please let us know, thx.

I just signed up for charter internet access and the offer they gave was 1.54Mbps/128kbps for 34.95 including the rental of cable modem. The special was they were going to charge me the same price as 384kbps/128kbps until April 2004 and that by the end of the year my download speed will go up to 2Mbps. Also the service includes free installation, i'm just glad that i'm getting high speed internet access.

Due to a screw up on Charter's part I only pay $20/month for 2.0mb/128kbps service (I own my own modem).
I think this will last until April.

I got a flier in the mail for Charter "highspeed" cable internet access. Key points:

1) $29.95/month for up to 2 mb connection.
2) No cable subscription required (so no $10 more a month for basic cable).

Is #1 true? I checked charter.com and it says the slower service is $29.95 and the 2 mb service is $39.95. I'd subscribe for $29.95/month for 2 mb and get my own cable modem to save the extra $5/month rental fee.

Time to give them a call I guess. I'm guess the ad is worded so it sounds like the 2 mb is $29.95. If the 2 mb service is really $39.95, the ad is worded so blatantly incorrect that I think a court case would win against them for false advertising (not that I'm going to try).

Called Charter and deal is:

$29.95/month until April 30, 2004 for "2 Meg" service. Then price or speed changes. No contract so one could cancel.

Cable modem rentel is $4.95/month additional. Any deals on cable modems? If I can get one for around $50, I'd rather buy than rent.

edit: I saw the SB5100 recommended over at broadbandreports.com and eBay seems to be choke full of them at $45 buy it now with $10 shipping. Not bad compared to six months ago when it seemed like deals on the cable modems were hard to find.

Any opinions here on the SB5100?

Everybody should read this. Where I live the website says 29.99 for 384 and 39.99 for the 2 mb. Heres the kicker, when it came out, I signed up for the silver package ( 1.5mb down 128 up = 69.99 ) I went to their website and found the 2 mb for 39.99. I am still paying 69.99 GRRRRRRRRRR no notice was sent to me about this. I was getting ripped off. So I am on the phone right now with charter and getting it switched. ( I do like charter and the support is great here in my area) As I type the the billing dept is switching and BOOM it is a done deal. I am switched. I suggest that any with charter review your internet plan and see what you paying, make the adjustments if you have too.:Q:beer:😀
