New CenturyLink/Qwest DSL Modem

Hi all,

My CenturyLink DSL provider will upgrade my service from 1.5 Mbps to 7 - 12 Mbps. However, I will need a new DSL modem. They have 3 suggested VDSL2 modems for me to choose. They are:
ZyXEL Q100
ZyXEL Q1000z
Actiontec Q1001

I am not familiar with these brands other than the old Actiontec GT701R that I currently use. I currently also have a old 2.4 Mz. Buffalo wireless G router. Which of the above should I buy? I assume that the combo units will let me operate at higher speeds (5GHz / N? spec). I don't know what VDSL2 means but the CenturyLink tech on the line says I need one for the faster speeds.

Moreover, could I buy outside of CenturyLink's recommendations? If yes, what do you suggest and what are the down sides? Best regards.

From what I can tell:

ZyXel Q100=basic modem, you would need a wireless router of your own
ZyXel Q1000z=modem/router combo, you wouldn't need an additional wireless router of your own
Actiontec Q1001= I couldn't find anything on this particular device...

Now, getting 7-12 Mbps is good, but your Buffalo router would still be able to keep up. If you're worried about it, now's not a bad time to upgrade to 802.11n, but do you have any wireless devices that could benefit from it?

Are you planning on buying one of these units? Or leasing?

Of course you could buy outside of their recommendations, just be prepared to support it on your own.

Just like if I buy my own cable modem instead of leasing from Comcast. It's inevitable there will be a problem with any modem, but if it's not from Comcast then the blame will automatically be placed on my device.

Trying googling and reading some reviews on the devices they offer, and go with what you think fits your needs the best. For me, less headache the better.

I still lease my modem from comcast, even though it's getting a bit steep ($7/month), but if the modem dies, they're replacing it...
