Spelled out here.
Snippet:
"The rules are part of new regulations announced Monday by the Federal Communications Commission.
The rules, which take effect Nov. 24, will allow wireless phone customers to hang onto their current wireless phone numbers even if they shift between providers, a process known as number portability.
The commission ruled Monday that the rules also require local phone companies to allow portability to wireless phone services in the nation's 100 largest markets. Carriers outside those 100 markets have an extra six months, until May 24, to comply with the rules. "
Now my question: I am paying for a private land line and two numbers for something around $50 month through Verizon. I cannot get a deal with BellSouth because Verizon has this area to itself. So could I find a cell phone company that I like, with the phone I want, and have them take one of my land line numbers? I know I won't be private anymore, unless I pay for ID blocking per call or month. But that wasn't why I had it in the first place. An old girlfriend was stalking me and I had the number changed. So really, since there isn't a cell phone directory (not yet) this would be just as good, right? And now it would be cheaper.
Anyone tried this yet?
