new CDRW suggestions?

I've currently got a SCSI Plextor 8x20 CDR that is dying, if not dead already. I've also have a SCSI Plextor 32x CD.

I'm wondering if I should pay the extra $50 to get the SCSI Plextor 12x10x32 CDRW or if I should just get the EIDE 16x10x40.

I've always been able to copy directly from CD to CDR without any problems at all. And I can still websurf while the CD is burning and don't have to worry about creating coasters.

I've been told that w/ EIDE CDRs, you cannot copy directly from CD to CDR with the same speed and accuracy that you can on a SCSI bus. And you certainly cannot go websurfing while doing or you'll almost for certain create a coaster.

If it's only $50, why not? And the only difference between 12x and 16x burning is just a couple of minutes, that small amount of sacrifice is well worth the consistancy of a SCSI drive.

I have that same burner, the 8/20. Mine is still chugging along fine, but I've been looking at something faster, and I can't decide between the 12X scsi & 16X ide. Lemme know what u do & how u like. Not an easy decison.

I would go for the IDE, but if CD to CD is a big thing for you, SCSI might be better, though I think the IDE will handle it just fine, especially if the drives are on different buses (ie IDE 0 and 1 or IDE and SCSI, like your case). OTOH, 12x and 16x isn't much of a difference, but combined with a $50 savings, it looks good.

Either way, you'll probably be happy with your drive.

BTW, I have the plextor 12x IDE, and no SCSI on my system. I don't do as many CD to CD copies, so maybe wait for another opinion. IDE w/ burnproof works flawlessly though, even on a PII 350, just make sure to turn on DMA.
