Should I get this:

Philips Power Booster 640-Watt Mini Hi-Fi System with 3-CD Changer and wOOx Technology
Model: FWC798

or this:

Panasonic Dolby Digital Shelf System with Biamped Front Speakers and Subwoofer Output
Model: SC-AK600

or something else?

cool, w00t technology.

LOL, that is what I thought it said too.

And my brother has the Panasonic one, it sounds alright.
It has 5 speakers, I think it is trying to be a mini-surround sound system.
If you aren't interested in that them maybe you should look at a different model.

what do the the watts mean? I understand it's a unit of measurement - what does it mean to me as a listener? More watts means it can go louder?

That's what companies selling them would like you to believe, however, thats not always the case. For a "loudness" gauge, look at the RMS value. The higher the RMS, the louder the system
