So my girlfriend and I were looking for a pet that would fit nicely with our apartment and we decided on a cat.

We went down to the local animal shelter, what was originally a trip for one cat we ended up with two. We have to wait a week for the nuetering and shots and all that.

I was looking for advice on how best to make the two comfortable in their new home, what toys to buy and any other helpful advice you can offer.

Thanks :)

BTW, the reason we ended up with two was because the two are brothers and my girlfriend didn't want them to be separated.

They don't need expensive things either. My cat, Beverly, likes playing with sheets of newspaper. She tries to turn the pages like a person would, and eventually just tries burrowing under the pages and attacking them.
She also likes playing with little balls of paper.

I can even play hide and seek with her if she feels like it. I'll just quick run to another room and hide, and if she doesn't know where I am, she'll just keep looking all over the place, with her ears moving all around listening for me. As soon as I pop out of where I'm hiding, she makes this funny meow and just acts all thrilled to see me.

I will try to help the best I can. My folks raised/bred cats so I do have somewhat of an educated opinion.

What is their age? I really hope you got kittens otherwise it is a long process.

If they are kittens (6-16 weeks) you can follow a set of behavioral modifications to make them a very nice kitty. If older then it will require some work.

Best advice? Become their Mom.

When you get sick of them and their hair being everywhere, take them to the vet to be put down. Do not put them in a pillow case and then submerge it in a bathtub full of water.

Get a scratching post and put cat nip on it. It will encourage the cats to use that instead of the sofa to sharpen their claws.

here are some cheap toys that'll keep your cats engaged:

balls of aluminum foil
the little cardboard tube in toilet paper
ping pong balls
styrofoam peanuts

Good advice for pesky folk who pop up, unwanted in ATOT threads.

Don't let them outside. Prisoner kitties live longer, healthier lives.

Don't feed them people food. Get good quality cat food.

Change the litter boxes often.

Don't let them outside. Cars always win.

Before they arrive, go through your house and put away all pins, rubber bands, thread, and foil. Cats can be really dumb about eating stuff that will kill them.

Don't let them outside.

Provide water at all times.

Cats are trainable. Keep an eye on them the first few days and train them to leave dangerous stuff like electric cords alone.

Play with them, get them used to being handled. It makes life alot easier when you need to trim claws, give pills, give baths, etc.

My cat would go bonkers trying to get that dot on the wall.

It's amazing how high they can jump when they feel the need.

Best rated cat toy : Panic Mouse 360 --- IT MAKES THEM NUTS, A++. Other than that, cut up a cardboard box, or give them Qtips.

Get good cat food. It definately improves their coat . I use Wellness and it's a great brand :D. Wet food is naturally better. Most cats do not like to drink water. Dont feed them junk. It will make then fat, and lower their life expectancy.

Water: If you can, buy a drinkwell fountain. My cats love it.

Scratching Post: Get a good solid one that doesnt move at all. Train them to use it - save your furnitures life!

Litter : Get something that clumps well, and that's flushable. (tidy cat scoopable) Try to clean it after they poop, or at least once a day. You may want to clean the whole thing out once a week, but DONT. It will smell and get disgusting, making cleaning 10x harder. Trust me.

Brush them everyday!!! Definately doo thiss!! You dont want hairballs or loose cat hair all over your apt/ furniture. Make sure you have a good vacuum.

Invest in a good air purifier. Since you live in an apt, i would highly recommend it. Youll feel the difference.

For treats: Vitakitty and Feline Greenies! Use them as rewards for good behavior.

Enjoy the cats :D

My parents cat is an outdoor cat and she is 13 years old. They also feed her people food all the time. She has eaten turkey, ham, eggs, tuna, hamburger meat, steak, fish, and bacon. Probably other stuff too and she's as healthy as can be.

Yes, scratching post for sure. I'm not too sure on the catnip though, it drives one of my cats so crazy I can't even have it in the house.

My parents had a cat that catnip made the cat go into convultions.

You can get them that little feather/twig on a wire thing. That drives them nuts every time.

Teeth: Get a water additive and/or some Greenies treats; the more you take care of their teeth, the less likely you'll have to get an expensive teeth cleaning. I usually just put in three greenies or so in their breakast everyday/
Scratching post
Get one of those "cat condos"; they don't always like getting inside them, but it makes a great "extra" scratching post, plus my cats like sleeping on top
Cat bed; again, no guarantee they'll use it a lot, but a couple of my cats like napping in it, one in particular uses it all night if he doesn't feel like sleeping with me
Toy mice: get some of those packages where it has a bunch of little mice you can throw, preferably the well made ones, NOT Hartz; they have cheap cardboard tails which tend to wear off realtively easily, and you don't want them swallowing crap
Teaser Wand: Cats LOVE this. Don't leave it out on the floor, only have it out when you're actually playing with them. Preferably get one with a soft toy on the end instead of a hard golf ball or something. Again, you don't want to give them the opportunity to rip off the feathers and eat them, but they sometimes like grabbing the toy in their mouth and running away with it. Hee.
Cat carrier: If you don't already have one, try to get one that's got an open grill on top. It can be easier to get them in and out from the top, plus it gives them plenty of air, so you don't have to worry about the side vents being restrictive. Also get some soft towels to put in there to make it more comfortable for them when in travel. Get some shelf liner from Wal-mart, a hardware store, or even one of those $1 stores. Put it under the towel to keep it from sliding it around too much.
Catnip IF you choose to use this, wait until they're of adult age, it can hurt them if they're still kittens or still growing. you can add it to their food to aid in digestion
litter boxes Get a "clamshell" style box that has a roof on it. If they tend to "sling" the litter around, this will help keep it inside. Also, get one of those litter-box mats to put in front. Any excess litter on their feet should get caught in that instead of getting on the carpet. Clean them out at least bi-weekly. As in, empty all of the litter and washing it out with soap and water, maybe some diluted bleach. Make sure the bleach smell is gone before you put it back. Preferably clean the top half of the litterbox too; they can sometimes get crap on there, believe it or not. Consider getting two boxes. It's not necessary, but if case you need to be gone overnight or don't have time to change it before leaving in the morning, they don't have to wallow in last night's filth. Try to use a scooper on it twice a day. Get a METAL scooper. The plastic one I used evetually broke; some of the waste can get pretty heavy, so make sure the trashbag doesn't get so heavy it breaks when you get ready to throw it out. Don't bother using litterbox liners; they suck and tear fairly easily.

For toys get a cardboard box, some big paper shopping bags and roll up some paper. Also get a scratching post and warm up some blankets in the drier for the cats to sleep on.

Also is the cat a longhair or shorthair?

Oh, and leave one or two windows open during the day, they like looking outside, even if they're stuck inside. They also like the window open (though the screen shut, duh) because of the "outside smells." Also consider putting some water near their favorite hangout spots. That's all I can think of, really.

The cats are two male short hairs, I'm not exactly sure on their age. The lady at the shelter said they were "younger" I know they're not full grown yet, but not tiny kitten either...I would almost consider them to be toddler age I guess. :p

We were planning on getting a carrier for trips to the vet or anything and as far as toys go the wand and laser pointer are a must.

As far as leaving windows open, we live on the top floor of a three story apartment, I just worry they might push on a screen and fall out. Do you think this is a possibility?

Keep the suggestions/comments coming. :)

Cardboard boxes, trust me. Forget the fancy toys, useless as ******. You can never have enough cardboard boxes, go to the grocery store and pick up a few varieties of size and shape.
