New Case

Hello all, long time lurker here.

In Short:

I need a case with good cooling, at least 2 5.25" bays, at least 3(4 would probably be better) 3.5" internal bays, and the ability to fit an ATX mobo with an Ultra-120 Extreme on top of it(it is bloody tall).

I'd prefer it to be at most a mid tower, as my space needs are minimal, so I'd like to keep weight down. Also, I prefer my PSU be on the bottom, since it may occasionally have unfortunate bumping occur.

I've been thinking of getting the Antec 300, since Amazon has a really good price on it right now, but I wanted to be sure that I've not overlooked any good competitors to it.

In Long:

I've been contemplating moving my gaming rig (now a couple years old 🙁 ) into a new case for a few reasons. The biggest is that the front bezel on my current case (P182SE, got a good price on ebay) is shattered beyond repair, making it difficult to move the case without risking further damage and rendering everything but my power/reset buttons unusable. The temporary fixes I've been using over the past year have worked well enough, but it's time to move on.

So, I contacted Antec about buying a replacement bezel and door, and the price runs at 30$ before shipping. That price puts fixing up my current case within spitting distance of simply buying a new one outright, so I've been doing some research to see what my options are.

This build is primarily for gaming, so my priorities are (in order) cooling, space, and silence. I use air cooling and currently a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme sits on my CPU.

One of the issues that has slowly grown is the weight of the P182. I really appreciate the durability of the steel, so I think the issue is that the case is too large for what I need. I only have 2 5.25" bays in use (out of the 4), and a mere 2 HDD's in the 3.5" internal racks. I'm planning on getting an SSD in the near future (<6 months) so my criteria are simple.

Well, that post certainly got long-winded, thanks for reading this far.

The Antec 300, like you mentioned, would be on my short list.

It's nothing fancy, but it's cheap and (from what I've heard) well built.

I have the Antec 900 its a well built case with great airflow for cooling. The 300 was my first choice but i chose the 900 for the extra looks.

Yeah i would say antec 900 case you get the front cooling fans to, antec 300 you would have to buy to front fans if you want them and thats extra 20 bucks atleast.

I was going to go with a Thermaltake Element T case but after seeing this thread will go with the Antec 300. I don't want the LED fans (I'm sure it would annoy the heck out of me). I'm going to be running a single NVIDIA 275 card and a single hard drive for now (will probably add a second down the road) so the 300 suits my needs.

The Element T looks like a great case but my concern is the non-standard fan size along with the LED fans.

The LEDs aren't that bad really, unless you game /work in total darkness then I would say they may cause problems.

I considered the Antec 900 when I was originally building this box two years ago, but passed over it in favor of the P190, and then the P182 (when I gave the P190 to my brother.)

Fans are not an issue, I am shifting my computer from the P182 case it's currently in, which is quite broken, and the fans I have in there work just fine (a couple s-flex's.)

The main reason I decided to move to a new case is essentially to replace the broken bezel on my current box, my budget is very small. (Basically up to 70$ or so, a little more than double a new bezel) As I mentioned in my original post, Antec's replacement bezels are pricey enough to make this reasonable.

Since I was already in the position of having to throw some money into my box, I decided that I would respec it a bit. Since a few LAN parties have actually started taking place on campus last year and this year, moving to smaller case (the P182 is a little too heavy) would be a nice tweak. (switching to the 300 halves the weight of the case)

Regardless, Newegg had an absurd deal on the 300 over the weekend ($34 after rebate!) that I've already bought it. It should arrive tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice though, folks!
