New Case / New Problems / New headaches

Turkish

Lifer
Hello friends,

I guess today was the time that I had to come here and ask for suggestions 🙂 Well, I got this new case, Thermaltake XASER III, it came home today, i took all my components out of the old case, put them into the new case... however when I booted up for the first time, only 2 fans (out of 7) were working... well, the heatsink fan was workin, so I didn't worry too much about it, since the fan would stay cool because I didn't put the side panel back on. Anyways, I was thinking about a format for the last couple days, so I said, well here I am, since I'm on the job, I should format too... anyways while the PC was booting up, it just said "CMOS error - get to setup and go back to defaults, bla blaa bla"... so I press DEL, go to BIOS and guess what? It's asking for a password. Darn I never knew I put a password in there, because I didnt! I was pissed.. how the hell could BIOS setup a password itself... so I just hit the reboot button, and this time it says "CPU Changed - Go to BIOS and apply new settings". So I am like "WTF?" this is really weird.. so I just hit F1 for Windows to continue running and finally I get to Windows Setup Screen. Everything is fine (except 5 fans not working), so I just create new partions, delete old ones, etc, and all of a sudden; "Boom!", the goddamn PC restarts. Again, I am in the WTF Land. So I get back to Windows setup again and everything and all of a sudden, it reboots again and this time nothing will show up on my monitor. The power light just blinks on it. So I figure signal must not be going through. Well, I check all the connections, etc. and everything is fine. So I hit restart, and it boots up normal with the CPU Changed error, I get to Windows Setup again, and it does the same thing again, again not showin sh!t on the monitor.

Now I know this is darn long story to read, but if anyone has any idea what might be causing this, please let me know....It just is very confusing... and one more question: I got a Dual DDR motherboard (gigabyte), with 4 DIMM slots. and I got 2 512mb regular corsair xms RAM, and 2 512mb platinium corsair xms RAM... How should I put these on the motherboard? I used to use the same memory type in the past, but now I got these 2 different ones. Should I just put the same ones side to side? OR should I put 1 regular, 1 platinium, 1 regular, 1 platinium?

Thanks.
Xiety

Sounds like you're overloading your psu.

That would more than likely be why the 5 fans aren't working especially if they're 5 volt fans.

PSU's can only deliver a certain amount of wattage and current on each of the supply rails, if you have too much one one rail (ie. the +5V rail) it will fail.

For instance even if you have a 450Watt power supply if it can only supply say 200Watts on the +5V rail and you have 7 fans, plus the motherboard, plus the cpu, plus the HSF plus whatever else you've got in there then it won't be able to cope and will give you the symptoms you are experiencing.

Get hold of a decent 550Watt PSU and make sure you check the ratings for each supply rail, they should be on a sticker on the PSU. If the PSU doesn't have this sticker then DO NOT buy it as you have no idea what it is capable of running, just because it says it's 550Watts doesn't mean it can perform at that comfortably for an extended period of time.

I think the PSU is fine, because I tried a PSU with the ratings you suggested and it still doesn't work. Any other help?

Thanks

What were the ratings on the PSU you tried (and your current one for that matter) I need the wattage on each line and maximum ampage.

Also try reseating all the components and check the mobo isn't shorting anywhere on the case, I've been caught myself before by having a mobo spacer in the wrong place on the tray so everytime I tightened the expansion cards it caused the motherboard to short, it's not always the obvious.

You may want to try double checking your mobo standoffs, etc. to make sure nothing is shorting anything out.

if anything's being shorted out, the computer won't even start at all...

so it's not a short problem...and i know aobut this problem...

here's a possible solution:

as always, take out all unessasary components...just keep in the components nessesary (how the hell do you spell nessesary?..phok!) to keep the comp booting...

first, reset your CMOS
and then underclock your cpu to the lowest possible..then install windows.

as for your RAM question, it doesn't matter where you put them..as long as all 4 are the same speeds

Alright guys thanks, however when I want to get to CMOS and reset it, it asks for the CMOS password, which I didn't set (nor anyone else). How will I reset the 0CMOS password? I tried taking out the battery out on the mobo however that didnt reset it. It's a gigabyte 8QX800 mobo (the model number might not be exact, i am on another computer away from home).

Thanks.

Hey Xiety, do you have any front-USB wiring plugged into your mobo? If so, unplug it for now and see if that helps.

About the memory question: what exact model of Gigabyte do you have there?

Hey man, I hope you still check this thread out 😀

Here is the ratings of the original PSU that came with the case:

Input Voltage = 115 VAC / 230 VAC
Input Frequency Range = 47-63 Hz
Input Current = 10.0A (Measuring Range 90-132Vrms)
5.0A (Measuring Range 180-264Vrms)
Hold-up Time = > 16ms at Full Load
Efficiency = > 65%

OUTPUT

+5V -5V +12V -12V +3.3V +5VSB

Max. Load 40A 0.3A 18A 0.8A 30A 2A

Min. Load 1.5A 0A 0.2A 0A 0.3A 0A

Load Reg. +5% ~ -5% +10% ~ -10% +5% ~ -5% +10% ~ -10% +5% ~ -5% +5% ~ -5%

Ripple
V(p-p) 50mV 100mV 120mV 120mV 50mV 50mV

And here are the ratings for the PSU that I used later on:

Leadman Powmax, ATX500W

AC INPUT 115V/230V, 10A/6A 60Hz/50Hz
DC OUTPUT +3.3V +5V +12V -5V -12V +5Vsb Total
30A 50A 25A 0.3A 0.8A 2.0A 500W
MAX M A X 3 4 9 W 1.5W 9.6W 10W

So what could possibly be wrong?? Thanks a lot again....

hey guys, mechbgon suggested me to take out all unnecessary parts out and try to run setup with mobo on a cardboard... well that didn't help much because somehow my monitor doesnt show anything. it receives signal, i know that, because if it didn't it would say "check signal cable"... however nothing right now. the power led on the monitor just blinks... maybe my graphics card is dead? it's an ati radeon 9500 pro... have anyone of you heard of this card having problems similar to this?

thanks.

You have the secondary power plugged in for the video card, right? Make sure it's fully seated in both rows of electrical contacts in the AGP slot too, sometimes they try to sneak out 😀

so i have this power line with 2 plugs coming out of my video card, they both have to be connected in somewhere? that's weird.

Just make sure it's plugged into the power supply so the video card has the power it's wanting. 🙂

yeah it got the power it wants, but still nothing 🙁 oh how messed up this is... can't work on any projects or anything. 🙁 another weird thing mech, when i try this stuff on the cardboard, the cd drive doesn't open when i hit the open button. it was working before i took it out of the case.

Interesting. Try running the system without the CD-ROM drive plugged into the power or IDE cables... perhaps it's toast.

toast? 🙂 well, now that you said that, i tried running the system without the cd-rom drive plugged in. and still, nothing on the monitor.

Yeah I check the forums when I get a chance

The second psu should be well capable of running anything you throw at it, the first one is a little low on the 12V rail but still not too shabby.

Do you know if the fans in the case are 12V or 5V?

As for the CMOS password check in your mobo manual, it's a longshot but there might be a default, if not have you ever been in the bios since you bought the mobo? If not take it back to where you purchased it as it would appear to be a used part... If you have then somebody must have put a password in.

Does your mobo have a dual bios option some gigabytes do but I'm not sure which ones off the top of my head? If it does swap the bios and see if that helps. If it does then copy the working bios to the non working one and it should clear the password.

Hey mnementh,

You won't believe this but the problem was uncompatible memory. It's ridiculous... the memory speed and clock is all supported by the mobo (giga 8sq800) but this certain memory module (corsair xms) just fvcks everything up. Even funnier is, this only happens in certain corsair models of memory. The RAM led was all orange when the bad memory was in, so I never thought it would memory but I am glad it works now. Thanks for all the time you have spent replying 🙂
