I used to have a Geforce4 4600 Ti 128 MB from VisionTek. It broke down on me.

It turns out that VisionTek is not the same company it was when I bought my card. This new VisionTek was bought by some company that bought their name but not their debt.

My warranty is no longer valid. They sent me an upgrade credit form (grrr the formatting messed up on the paste for the second table) that I show below with the credits I could get towards their Radeons (funny that is all they offer).

Unfortunately they put a cap on the total credit I can apply to their lesser line of Radeons as you can see. I just can not afford using the full $125 towards paying the difference of ~$300+ for either 9800's.

I am seeking advice on what cards out there fit my present and future needs / wants / abilities.

I currently use an old replacement Diamond Multimedia Savage4 32MB card that surprisingly can not handle EverQuest in old world zones. I am not talking about Luclin here. Simple startint cities lag horribly.

I am unable to play my Medal of Honor on this card (Open GL issues I think it was), so there is no point in looking to get expansions until I can get a better card.

I can play Thief Gold / Thief II fine on it, which is what I am playing presently since I never finished those games.

I can't even try demos of newer games like Call of Duty, Tron 2.0, etc. I guess it has to do with GL or DX support.

Deus Ex demo works fine so far in training session. I don't have the game.

Of course Half-Life based games run ok.

I want to play Call of Duty some day. Half Life 2 of course. I understand I may have to get an interim card that is just 8.1 Dx capable.

I don't generally turn every detail up on games since I am not there to admire the scenery. That would just get me killed :) I may turn up some things for overall good looks. I like to play in at least 1027 res since I own a 19" viewable CRT.

I have not tested this card yet with the other games I have lying around which I have not finished (Rogue Spear, Homeworld). I imagine Myth II would run fine on this card (heh never finished that one either). I still have Tribes 2 which I don't remember playing online....blasted EQ :).

You can see from the original card that I had that I was overall a serious gamer. I do not have the cash to buy a $400 card these days.

I have been out of sync with the computer tech market a while, and am overwhelmed with the options and names / designations out there.

TV on a card would be nice since I do not own a TV (I burned out on me too), but I see AIW's look to be rather expensive.

To summarize: I play everything from Thief (upcoming Thief 3 looking forward too), HL based games like TFC, EverQuest, FPS such as MOA (want Call of Duty), perhaps play Halo (heard it can challenge best systems), and look forward to HL2.

I have been looking around at prices on Price Grabber and Price Watch, but am unsure what to look for.

Please suggest practical cards out there I could use for my needs. At this time $200 hurts.

Thanks.

That trade In Program SUCKS

Well... it's not *that* bad. A 9800Pro for $275 is actually a pretty good deal -- that card goes for like $350 at newegg! And a 9600 for $110 is alright (unless it's a 9600 PRO for $110, which would be a great price).

If you can't afford a 9800Pro, but want something that can run newer games, another Ti4200/4600 or a 9600Pro would probably be your best bets. A new 9600Pro is around $150, and you can probably find a used 4600 for closer to $100-110, or a new one for around $150. For $200 you could get a 5900FX Non-Ultra, which would be a decent step up from your old 4600 in terms of performance.

I see that Future Power PC has "Power-Color ATI Radeon 9600SE (325MHz) (128MB DDR / CRT, DVI, TV-Out) (Retail)" for $100 even (no tax or shipping).

I also see through Price Watch a 4200 64MB OEM card for a total price of $75.78.

Since my motherboard is a KT7A with just 4x capability and I don't know if or when I will upgrade the board, I probably should just get a 4200 you think?

Another question I have is does it make any noticable difference between a 64 and a 128 memory card?

I don't want to chug in framerates on EQ raids or in Luclin zones. I did notice a difference switching from 2x to 4x in the BIOS though. What a night and day difference in EQ Luclin zones like Fungus Grove! No choppy lag and I could have the clip plane all the way out in there.

My real issue right now is that I am quite strapped for cash, but yet wanting to play the games that I DO have that became unplayable when my 4600 broke down.

(gah now I see that other post about Newegg refurbs and radeon 9000 pro 128mb for $69 hehe. Guess I just need to keep looking. Is this card comparable to what I had anyway? Also..."VGA PNY Verto GEFORCE FX 128MB DDR AGP 8X 5200 DUAL VGA TV-OUT " for $62)

agpx4 is plenty good enough, 128mb of video ram is really nice to have, and none of the cards you mentioned will be as fast as a ti4600. a new ti4600 will cost you at least 130$ and anything beter will cost more.

Read the budget video cards roundup on the front page of the main Anandtech site. That fx5200 is slower than Homer with the crayon in a little too far.
