New carb is on the truck. Drives much better.

It still wont idle until it's warm :disgust: but once it's warm it responds so much better to the throttle and just runs smoother. I also adjsuted the timing. It was at 3 degrees and I moved it up to 10. I don't know why it was set so low... stock is 6 degrees.

After the motor was back together, I started striping off paint and re-primering it. It's got a bit of surface rust on it and I wanted to get rid of that before it gets too much worse. I'll finsih priming the hood tomorrow and take pics.

Might be a new carb, but if it won't idle until the engine is warm. Either there is something wrong with your choke and/or jetting.

maybe it was retarded because it was pinging too much. or ran too hot. or was being fed crapola gasoline.

Well, it's not pinging or overheating at 10. I'm gonna leave it there unless it causes problems 🙂

And yeah, I think the choke is fvcked up, so I'm gonna look at that again.

When cold, the choke should be shut. Once it starts, the choke pull-off (a vacuum diaphragm) should pull the butterfly valve open about 1/8".

From your choke there's a linkage going down to the fast idle cam. The screw should be on the highest step with the choke closed, and the next highest when the pull off engages. You have to bend the linkage to adjust that.

On the second step (of the fast idle cam) is where you adjust the fast idle speed. I don't recall what spec is... But it's probably around 1700rpm or so.

And of course when the choke is fully open, the fast idle screw should not be touching the cam.

(My apologies if you already knew all this... If you didn't, I hope it helps.)
