Uh oh... I have found my first mod. Stock is no longer good enough for me. See here.

<< Holy crap that's a torquey little bitch. What's the acceleration like? >>

The torque spec is only 0-400. I don't have the stats but it's progressively worse as the speed increases, at least until the gas engine starts getting to a better range for itself. Thus, it's excellent at accelerating from a dead stop, but it is essentially a economy car at high speed. BTW, I use the word "excellent" loosely. It's not like it's a V12 BMW or anything.

<< How do you like it so far? >>

I do like it a lot. The realtime engine monitor is tres cool. It calculates average L/km as well L/km in the last 30 minutes in 5 minute intervals, using bar graphs, in real time. Plus it tells you how many W/hr were generated for the electrical engine. It's an ugly car, but at least it's not as ugly as an Aztec or Echo. :p It's a stubby little car, and in fact shorter than my old Escort. However, it's surprisingly roomy inside, and the trunk is very large. What really irks me though is that the rear seats don't fold down. :| It also freaks people out when I pull up behind them (at low speed) with ZERO engine noise, because the gas engine has dutifully shut itself off.

<< Type R stickers Make sure to get one that covers your whole windshield! >>

I may just get that 8" Type R sticker. Dunno if the dealership will get the joke or else think I'm a total fool.

Lol last time I was in autozone they were building a rice aisle with lights, seat belt pads (for high g-force cornering) with kanji characters on them, and type r stickers :D

<< Is it yellow with racing strips? >>

Yeah I wish! ;) It's white, not by choice (demo).

BTW, where can I find these stickers in Toronto? I think I'm gonna get a small one.

Dude, I agree with the other guys... get one of the TRD (Toyota Racing Development) stickers.. .even better ,get one from one of their trucks that says "TRD Off-Road" or something like that... ;-)

Nothing wrong with putting stickers on your car if it's just to mock the other guys. My next project is a Jeep Wrangler "Type R" [laughing] ... It's going to have 350 horses / 420 lb-feet of torque - we'll see if the state lets me get "EAT RICE" for a license plate.

(and yes, my other car is an import ;-)

Yet another person who does not understand a simple joke. I wonder if my dealer will get it, when I take the car in for servicing.

<< I heard from a car mag that these hybrids have problems in very cold weather....is that true? >>

I dunno, I got my car last week and it's summer here. However, that may be more true with the Japanese version. It apparently uses a smaller gas engine, and it's tuned differently. For the North American market, Toyota upped the engine displacement to a whopping 1.5 L. I do know that while people have run the car fine in the Northern States and in Canada, the gas mileage does drop a fair amount. I can tell you first hand that running A/C significantly cuts the gas mileage too. With it off, the car usually shuts off the gas engine while I'm "idling", ie. parked in front of my friend's place waiting or else at a red light. If I have A/C on, the gas engine keeps coming on for brief periods.

P.S. Judging by my short experience with this car, I'm getting around 45-50 mpg (US) on the highway with the A/C sometimes on.

Dunno first hand, but people say it's better than average. It's probably because it has supplementary electrical coils for the heater built-in. I remember as a kid, you need those extra electric heaters for the crappier cars up here. Nobody has them nowadays though.

I don't know the specifics of a hybrid car, but wouldn't that be a lot of wear on the gas engine to be constantly turning on and off? To the starter and whatnot.

Oh yeah, you gotta get those wheels chromed so you can have a Prius Type-R "rollin on dubs". A car ain't a thing without the bling bling. :)

<< I don't know the specifics of a hybrid car, but wouldn't that be a lot of wear on the gas engine to be constantly turning on and off? To the starter and whatnot. >>

Well, it doesn't start like a normal car. Basically the way it starts is electrical engine comes on and then revs it up to a few hundred rpm before turning on the gas engine. It supposedly is much less harsh on the engine, and you hear no starter. It's weird but all you get is slight vibrations and sound to tell you that the engine has come on.

Actually, especially if the stereo is on, and if you're moving (at low speeds), it's sometimes very hard to know if the gas engine is on or off. So, I've ordered this mod. I dunno if counts as a rice mod, because the purpose is to get better gas mileage, and therefore reduce performance. ;)

I got this off the Prius group at Yahoo:

Prius starts the ICE by spinning it up to several hundred RPM before
applying spark and gas. It happens pretty quickly, so I don't know
how much time there is for oil to circulate. To the driver it seems a
lot smoother and less stressful than the cranking and low-RPM starting
of a conventional car. It also makes for a very smooth transition
between all-electric and ICE-assisted modes while driving.

The ICE will also run to top off the battery when the car is in Park.
But you don't have to wait for this to finish. You can drive off
when you wish and the car will deal with battery SOC automatically.

...the Prius engine is Al block with iron sleeves. No word from
Japan, where they've been out for several years, that they are
unreliable. But I would say the jury is still out. Be aware that
Prius limits ICE RPM to 4000 (? -not sure of the exact figure).
Between that and assistance from the electric motor the engine stress
per mile is probably less than other cars.

Question
Are Federal Tax deductions available for purchasing a Prius?

Answer
An individual consumer purchaser of a Prius may be entitled to a federal tax deduction of up to $2,000 for Prius purchases completed on or before December 31, 2001. The deduction is not available to a consumer lessee of a Prius. To the extent applicable, this deduction is available to consumers regardless of whether they itemize deductions on their individual income tax return. The overall federal tax benefit will depend on your individual tax situation, particularly if you claim depreciation deductions on your Prius. So, please contact your individual tax advisor for further information on how you can take advantage of this important federal tax benefit for qualified clean-fuel vehicles like the Prius (IRC Section 179A). State income tax benefits may also be available in the following states because their definitions of state taxable income can in part include the above federal deduction: AZ, AR, CO, CT, DE, DC, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NE, NM, NY, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, RI, SC, UT, VT, VA, WV and WI. Separate state tax benefits specifically directed towards vehicles like the Prius may also be available in LA, MD, NY and VA. Your individual tax advisor may also have further information on any state and local benefits available to purchasers of the Prius.

do that

and make sure you always have gas

Question
If Prius runs out of gas, can it run off the electric battery?

Answer
Prius is meant to be treated as a conventional vehicle. It should never be run on an empty tank of gas. Severe damage to the battery pack can occur if the vehicle is driven without gas.

Not bad for a 2800 lb car with only a 4 cylinder 70 HP gas engine (plus a 44 HP electric engine). Supposedly it does 0-60 in 12.5 sec, so obviously, it ain't no sports car. I wonder if anyone will be able to chip this car though, just for fun.

There is NO car that can match the Prius's THS (Toyota hybrid
system) power curve... NONE, period. It is a near-perfect power
curve.

The mod could be a simple ECU replacement, if a company can come up
with one that could let us taste this power (if the beast in the Prius
is let loose, we'll have all 324 lbs of torque to rip our axles
apart). Such a mod may void the warranty, however.

Thanks for the info about the accelerometer.

I raced my friend's Chrysler Intrepid (200 horsepower), and won. I
tried this race up a steep hill. In the very first second he got a
short-lived lead, but I passed him (listening to his defunct V6
groaning under stress, while the Prius's 3-phase AC induction motor
was quietly and happily humming away, in sync with the VVTi engine) at
around 10 mph and at the top of the hill he was behind sever car
lengths. Stopped at the top, and we talked a bit... he said
(meekishly): "I think I'll have to get one of those soon!"

EDIT:

EVEN BETTER!!!

Well... From tonite's experience, I'd say I was on the "left" coast.
Was out testing the new cruise and was stopped at the light right at
the local WaWa. An older Nissan had been behind me pulled alongside
with 4 female occupants.
The one in the rear-passenger seat hollered over "Is that a hybrid?"
I replied "Yes, It's a Toyota Prius".
Her reply was "Cool!" and then she flashed me!

For the VERY FIRST time, another car beat me off the light! An old,
clunker Nissan - no less! :)
