New car warranties...

Is is good to get the dealer's warranty on a new car or cheaper/better to go with some other company? Anyone have advice on this? Would it be more cost effective to just stash money away to pay for a future repair?

What country do you live in?
What new car are you buying?

New cars comes with manufacturers warranty and that's all you need.

Personally if you're going to get an extended warranty you're probably better off getting one from the manufacturer.

Eh, I wouldn't bother. The Civic has never had any major design flaws and its highly unlikely the 2013 would be any different.

There have been many scams (mainly out of Florida) of extended warranty companies. That doesn't mean that all aftermarket extended warranty packages are scams. UUG (Universal Underwriters Group) is one of the largest and in more dealerships than any other aftermarket company. You can go directly to UUG if you want and get a bid. I purchased a 2012 Honda and with some negotiations was able to get a good deal on a Honda extended warranty. Besides the price of the contract, you need to compare apples to apples, meaning, do both policies include the same deductable? Rental Car? etc. etc.

US I am looking at the '13 Honda Civic SI

Youngin out buy first new car?
Don't bother with extended
Honda handles warranty
Dealer does the work.
Lay off "Mods" and strictly follow maintenance schedule and car should last you until it is either stolen or you are tired of driving a civic.

"A survey and report published in its annual auto issue (Consumer Reports) in April found that 65 percent of about 8,000 Consumer Reports readers said they had spent significantly more for a new-car warranty than they had saved in repair costs.

Only about 5 percent said they had a net saving, and about 42 percent of extended warranties were never used."

When I bought my last Honda, I didn't have to make a decision on the extended warranty when I bought the car. If I remember correctly, I could have bought the Honda Extended Warranty any time prior to the original warranty running out.

Also, I noticed that the warranty was available online from other Honda dealers for about half the price that my dealer wanted.

Best of luck with your Civic Si. I know that I loved mine. Though, I'm confident that yours will be a much better automobile that my '86 was.

Unless you consider nearly 30 young haha. My first new car was a Saturn Ion that had no major problems, other than a clutch going out which was expected at 90k miles. I didn't know if my experience with it was common or not. I just wanted to be sure what I heard about warranties was correct: they aren't necessary. It seems I heard correctly. Not planning on mods. 🙂

For most asian and american cars I would skip unless there are known problems. For most european cars its a must IMO.

In your case just put the money you would spend on a extra warranty in the bank and save it.

And this is why all companies from car dealers to Best Buy push extended warranties. They usually make huge profits from selling those.

I just bought a '12 Civic SI and am going without the extended. I have multiple family members who have had Civics (non-SI and SI variants) and no major issues outside of standard warranty. They also took care of it (i.e. didn't mod it, didn't trash it, etc)

I never bought an extended warranty on my old 99 Dakota and never needed it. Same goes for the 05 Malibu.

However, I did opt to extend the bumper to bumper warranty on my new F-150 from 3 years to 7 years or 70k miles. (I do a whopping 6k miles a year) It was actually fairly cheap in the grand scheme of things and there is just too many doo-dads on this new truck compared to the other vehicles I've owned. I may not need it, but I was in a position to buy/add it at time of purchase so I went for it and I never usually buy extended warranties.

Thing is.. I would never buy 3rd party warranty as I think it would be hard to beat the manufacturers coverage. I've often heard horror stories about 3rd party warranties not authorizing repairs, or requiring deductibles.

I bought my first NEW car in 1970 (Olds 442) and have been buying new cars ever since. I have never purchased an extended warranty on any car nor have I ever needed one. Generally I keep my cars for around 5-6 years and 80,000+ miles. If you get a real lemon you will know it way before your new car warranty expires.

I didn't buy an extended warranty on my Mazda, but I did for my Focus ST. It only came with 36k warranty. I purchased a 7yr/100k ESP from Ford for $1100. Plenty worth it to me. I wouldn't necessarily buy it from the dealer you get the car from though, I got mine from another Ford dealer online. Same warranty, much cheaper.

i bought an extended warranty from warranty direct. doesn't look like i'll be using it anytime soon though. 7 years/ 110K miles and i'm already at 100k with no issues.

Extended warranties are almost invariably complete wastes of money, doubly so if you are capable of doing your own work.

Besides, extended warranties usually only go out to, what, 100k? Any modern, well-maintained car that develops serious problems shy of 100k is an embarrassment to human civilization.

It's more for the just in case. IE, see that dood's post on here about his 2007 Camry. I for one agree with you completely - I used the same line on the dealer when he kept pushing me on the extended warranty. For a salesguy, he didn't have a good response back.

That being said - the fiancee's last two cars - she easily (ie, without trying) got an extended warranty thrown in for free. Similar to what you said - the dealers know it's worth a lot less nowadays for the points you said.

I got the same thing for my speed3 for about the same price. At this point I'm not so sure if that was a good idea simply because I'm itching to mod :awe: but that's counter intuitive to having the extended warranty :'(
