New Car Shopping

Alright guys, the Sky is totaled. The wreck did surprisingly little frame damage considering, but enough to put it over the edge. I prefer it this way because I certainly didn't want a car back after that level of damage. RIP little guy, you held up well.

Anyways, on to the future. I'm looking this time around to get a four seat car, sedan or coupe is fine. I would like to avoid downgrading performance wise and it's not that hard to have a nicer interior than the Sky. I try to avoid being a badge snob, but it does play a role now that I've started having to ferry clients around more often, and those things matter.

Obviously, the CTS-V is the most blatant choice, and while a 2009 is within the price I want to spend, it's on the bleeding edge. So I want to make sure and at least consider alternatives. I obviously do not mind used cars but I'd like to stay current or close to current body style, for example the E61 and F10 5 series are reasonably close looks wise. I want to stay between $35,000 and $45,000, but obviously lower is better. I'm trying to avoid cars with more than 35k miles except Mercedes because I can get it certified. I do not mind high maintenance costs, I do most of it on my own and/or get it at cost.

I will most likely purchase this car wholesale from a dealer's auction within the next 60 days, so I'm looking for a make/model/year/options, not an exact car unless there is a stellar deal. As previously stated, Mercedes is a big plus because I can get them certified. While I care about performance, if the right car/deal is there, I would consider purchasing it and a motorcycle or a weekend car later this year.

Thanks guys!

You've listed all the usual suspects.

The only one I would add to the list is a 2011 Mustang 5.0 (assuming rear seat space isn't a priority - it's got rear seats, but they suck)

I consider it, then I take it off, then I put it on. If I was only worried about performance it would certainly be on there (with a ford racing blower 😛), as would a C6Z, backseats be damned. Unfortunately I'm having to be a bit of a snob on my DD.

What about the new Chrysler 300C SRT8? Should fall into that price range IIRC.

It'll have to be a standard 300C, the SRT8 isn't due out until the 2012 model year. I'm a Chrysler hater but the new one's are supposedly much improved. I'll give it a drive 🙂

I love the new BMW 5 series, I like M3 coupes and the new Z4.

There are very few American cars I like, the CTS is not one of them due to poor styling.

From Mercedes, I love the new E-Coupes and the new SLK.

Found a C63 with some pretty serious performance upgrades, well over 500hp N/A. I'm highly interested but it has the fugliest rims I have ever seen. Considering buying and trading for some stock rims + cash.

C63 is seriously a demon on the road, i'd totally do that.

Gonna have a hard time getting a tuned C63 with a CPO. I would just buy a stocker and mod it yourself, headers and a tune produce ridiculous gains since the motor is so detuned from the factory.

I don't really care for the W204 interiors though, it's smaller and the materials aren't as nice as the previous gen. The dash especially, it's rather hardish and not nice to touch.

The E coupes are nice but again super small inside.

As someone that likes to tune, the V would be a great car. There aren't many issues with the engine, transmission or suspension so a 2009 should have improvements over the first year of the 2nd generation. You will also get some features that have been later dropped from the CTS-V like rainsesense wipers.

Yeah, I love that car but now that I've sobered up the wheels look even more horrendous. I'm going to go see what auction pricing on the C63's are and look into them today. It'll cost $6-8k just for headers and a tune, but the gains are pretty enormous. Some of the guys with those mods are on the edge of running 10's (11.05s). Plus they manage to sound better than even the V.

Checking prices today and test driving a stick and auto 2009 that are on a local lot. I really like that I can continue to tune it myself with hardware I already have. Plus it's a quick pulley, snout, and tune away from ~650hp. On the other hand, the looks are overly aggressive and at 6'6 225, I legitimately do not fit in the Recaros that many of them have.

Damn, didn't know you were such a big guy. You really need something much bigger if you are trying to compensate. Say maybe a tank or jet fighter.

I expect a tight fit in every car, but I literally cannot sit in the Recaro seats.

Funny about the jet fighter, I have wanted to be a pilot in the Air Force/Navy since I can remember, so when I was 17 I went to the recruiting office. Apparently I'm too big for jets due to the length of my legs and my inability to handle high G loads. I'd never be able to fly anything but cargo. F that.

Wow, have you sat inside a C63 or CTS?

Those things are tiny inside, and the seats especially. If you have man shoulders, you won't like them.

I'm coming from a Saturn Sky.

I'm willing to sacrifice comfort to still have fun in my cars, and I'm not willing to pay to step up to a car that has fat ass seats and still has the performance I want.

Drove a C63 at noon or so today, compared to the other cars so far it's like bringing Thor's hammer to a sword fight. I liked it. CTS-V here in a few hours.

Wow, how do you go from Saturn Sky to C63 or CTS-V?

That sounds like going from a light and sporty to heavy.

Did you read my first post? I'm trying to maintain some sportiness but I need to be able to ferry clients around when necessary. Please get out of my thread.

Those AMG mercs make some fantastic noise. I'd still say go with the CTS-V in case you need more room.
