I already have car insurance on my current vehicle. and last night, I just picked my new car(02 altima). Is there a timeframe I have to get insurance for the new car?

seeing that it is the weekend and my agent is closed, if I get pulled over or get in a wreck, am I screwd?

I think you have somehting like 48-72 hours or a week. I would assume this depends on the company.

Is it registered already? Some states require proof of insurance before you can get it registered. I'd get it insured as soon as possble. Especially not knowing the consequences of having an accident uninsured.

MOST insurance companies automatically cover new car purchases for 30 days, but they back-charge you to the date of purchase when you finally do add the car to your policy. It's quick and painless, and easy...and yes, you SHOULD be covered by your old policy, should you get stopped by the cops...just show them your OLD proof of insurance, and if asked, the paperwork from the dealership where you bought the car. (temp licence or similar)

I've been through tis more than just a few times in my years...Some of this will be controlled by state laws, but here in Kahleeforneeya, you automatically have 30 days with a new vehicle, presuming all the other provisions in your insurance remain valid. (like you pay your bill!) ;)
