Just put in an order for a new Macan S! Taking delivery in September/October...

Here is a link to nebor's thread http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2409324&highlight=macan from about 6 months ago, as he test-drove a lot of other vehicles we tried as well. Much of the same feedback, but somewhat different as well. Here is what we (my wife and I) thought of some of the other cars we checked-out:

-XC60: Great build quality but the ride was a bit too floaty for our tastes. The 'R-design' is too expensive IMHO for what you get and that's when it really starts to get interesting.
-X1: Rear seat room was much to small. Drove great though...wife didn't like how it looked either.
-X3: Better room vs. the X3 but steering was terrible. Design is a little boring and dealerships REALLY resisted the idea of ordering one as most available models didn't have what we wanted.
-RR Evoque: It was a challenge to even find one to test-drive, but it was 'meh'. Much more floaty than I expected, but the fit and finish was great. Did feel a little more cramped vs. the Macan as well. Price was actually pretty good at basic/mid trims and it came with a lot. Reliability was ???
-Q5 TDI: The torque was good but HP was less than ideal. The current one is a bit older as well vs. the other options and it felt top-heavy. Power delivery was very smooth though, and if we commuted a lot, would have been a top-choice.
-SQ5: The SC V6 was great! I still preferred the torque on the Macan, but this engine was a dream to drive. If this had the PDK transmission option, it would be amazing. Price isn't bad, but you probably want to build one as most available have a lot of options we didn't need.

In the end, we chose the Macan due to 2 main reasons:

-PDK shifting and engine responsiveness
This CUV drives like a dream and really engages you with the driving experience. Nothing else held a candle to this feel. Plus the engine sound was awesome too. :p

-Handling Options
We opted for the air suspension, which comes with adjustable ride control. As my time here in CLT is nearing an end, we will be back in MN for this winter. This gets you different ride/throttle settings as well as ~9'' of ground clearance.

We didn't option it to the moon or anything either. Mostly the performance updates and the premium plus package. Got it in the blue (wife wanted red, but that was 3k extra...)

Pics when it arrives!

Nice sled but man, that's expensive.

If I'm spending $80k on a vehicle it will be something like this.

Pretty sure this will be my next car.

Definitely not 80K....well under that. Got a bit off MSRP too.

The car you picture is nice, but its not a 12-month car in MN. ;)

This gives us some fun when its nice and a great (and safe) car in the winter. Got the 19'' wheels and will throw winters on that and then will get 20'' summer wheels/tires next year.

Edit: If we were staying in CLT, we probably would have gotten a different vehicle. We don't commute much, so MPGs aren't too important. Bad weather performance was a priority though.

Just out of curiosity did you ever consider the Cayenne (turbo or GTS)? If so whst was your opinion of it

I was able to convince the Porsche dealer to include the Macan in their Costco buyers program. Only one here locally in NC and another in CA (IIRC) participate at all. It knocked a bit off MSRP, which is nice. Otherwise its pretty tough to get it less than MSRP due to the demand. The builds all get grabbed right away...

It's a fantastic car. I drove the turbo, but not the GTS. It was great, but got close to 2x the price of the Macan after we added some of the packages and performance options. I still am surprised they haven't added the PDK either, that's a nice advantage to the Macan. The Cayenne is a bit bigger too. The space is nice, but it's not quite as agile.

After driving either, it was hard to find another SUV even close in price to consider. You actually get a lot for your money if you don't option it out a ton.

Literally just configured via website, sent code, and negotiated price. Was pretty painless. Saved a bit by purchasing at a dealer about an hour out of town, but that's nothing. Gives me some time to test it out after we pick it up. :)

Very nice!

Do agree with the look of the X1, short of the M-sport trimming, everything else looks kinda meh with the design.

It's the last BMW IIRC that still uses hydraulic steering too. It did drive nice. M trim would be great and you can get done killer deals on them too.
