93 Camry is somewhat dead.
Mechanic said it's the water pump or whatever and they wanted $800.
My local mechanic said it would cost about $350 for him to fix it.
Unfortunately, my cousin doesn't want to bother with fixing it and want a new vehicle.
I'll most likely ask for the car :D and drive it around as a beater in the winter !!

Current Candidates are

Scion Xa, Xb
Toyota Corolla

****COMPILED A LIST****

04 Hyundai Elantra GLS $11385
04 Mazda 3 Sedan $14000
04 Toyota Scion xA $13000
xB $14200
03 Corolla LE $13500
04 Honda Civic VP $13000
04 Lancer ES $12500

Those are the target prices that I got from Carsdirect.com
I'm gonna shoot for lower than that since most likely i'll be doing the negotiating on their behalf.
Hyundai Elantra, Lancer ES and Mazda 3 I believe will be negotiable down less about $400-500 bucks.
Not too sure about scion as (don't they have a no haggle pricing ? )
Corolla LE could most likely be negotiated lower, since it's an 03. The only problem is locating one.

What do you think ?
What prices should I be targeting for each vehicle ?

there are better options for a used car in that price range... (~01-02 Maxima)

edit: Xiety beat me to it.

Nissan Sentra - reliable little ah heck, and not half bad looking.
Ford Taurus - big, somewhat reliable, mountains of rebates/incentives
Honda Civic - reliable as all get-out, hugely-high resale value, downside is it's expensive as a new car.

Hyundai Elantra GT, under 15k through carsdirect.com. The cheaper version the GLS was rated less then a point under the Civic EX for the best economy sedan. And it has a great warranty. 60k bumper to bumper 100k powertrain

well, does she know she can get a used car with very low miles and at least a couple of years warranty left? if not, tell her that... seriously, i'd try to convince her no matter what she says :p

honestly, i would like her to have what she wants since it's her driving it.

if she's happy, I'll get the camry :) and fix it up and either drive it or sell it.

Consider the Mazda 3 as well. Otherwise hmm I can't think of much I'd be seen in for that price other than those.

If you recommend the purchase of a mitsubishi to anybody I will - well I shouldn't say it on the internet, because it could come back to haunt me. Do not do this, please.

Civic. Blah, boring. Forgettable.

Corolla: Nice car. Reliable and reasonably peppy.

Scion. I've not driven but much the same as the corolla. A new brand may carry some problems, but it is the same company, so you probably can't go wrong.

Mazda 3: Nice and quite fast, but not as reliable as a corolla

Hyundai has a good warranty, and decent bang for buck with better quality in the past, but if you had to ask me I'd still probably avoid a hyundai. Can't say for sure why. It just doesn't feel right.

yea, i guess she's just using it as an excuse for a new car.
anyways, taking off 4000-5000 on overpriced MSRP doesn't do much good.

Seriously, no Mitsubishi. It will be less reliable than a 93 camry - and that's if you DON'T fix the water pump on the camry. It's a dying company with crap cars (except for the evo).
