By "chipped" do you mean like Epson & HP's smart chips? If so, I assume (didn't look) that could be the case for Canon's portable & cheaper printers but for models like the iP5200, the contents list infers that the ink tanks & printhead are still seperate. Unless you require the features of Canon's "ChromaLife100 system". Don't see why other parties can't produce compatible inks.

EDIT: According to this thread, I possibly see what you mean... hopefully time will tell what the purpose of this chip is for.

I meant "3rd party" up there, obviously. Yes ink is still separate by color and separate from the heads, but they'll be forcing you into buying Canon's ink now.

Unless some "3rd party" :) finds a way pass this i.e. refilled & reused Canon tanks (resetted also?), or maybe it's possible to refill these ink tanks manually (hopefully minor PITA) instead of the usual "buy a tank, use, throw away tank, buy new tank" method. If either proves possible, perhaps it's not the end to cheap ink alternatives afterall ...yet.
