I have a S100 and Its very small and an excellent camera. I had a Nikon Coolpix 800 Before and this is so much better.

The S100 is so much better because of the Litium rechargable battery alone. IT last for a long time and the others eat them like crazy. s100

I got this camera from Amazon.com for$450 and it hasn't arrived yet. But it should tomorrow. does Amazon have a pricematch system if you order and something goes on sale else where?

oh yeah counselor is right , the lithium battery comes with it. The nimh on the s10 is optional and is like $65 even with coupons and such making them cost the same. Image quality is only a little different. The s10 supports the micro drive though, and has some more manual features and resolution / compression modes. Those aren't that important to me though, BTW i have an s100 from the mpsuperstore msn deal.

hans007, since it comes with lithium battery, can I use NiMH batteries on this S100? I got 16 NiMH batteries and thinking of buying this S100.

no it uses a proprietary battery, looks kinda like a cell phone one, you probably couldn't fit a AA in this , its too small.

I got the S100 from the mpsuperstore deal, it owns you so hard. I take it everywhere and take pictures of things I never would have gotten pictures of if I still had my Nikon 800, cuz it was too big to take everywhere. I thought of it this way: Why did I get a digicam? So I can take pictures of whatever I want and not have to worry about film costs etc. I only took the Nikon to events I was definitely going to take pictures of, so it was like a regular SLR to me in that respect. That's also the reason I chose the 100 over the 10, because the 10 is so much lighter and a bit smaller, I could never imagine going back to a big cam. The rechargable lithium battery is a great idea IMO, it's light, which is a BIG plus, AA's weighed down my Nikon badly. I'd definitely say get the S100 unless you want mad image controls. Also, STAY AWAY FROM NIKONS, they can't focus in the dark, and it won't let you take a picture, even with flash. You have to switch to manual focus in order for it to even take a picture. The canons have a neat little light that it flashes for a second so it can focus.

yea the light things is pretty cool. The only things i've read bad about it is that its only above average sharpness, not super sharp like the s10s, though its got good resolution so you can sharpen it up in paintshop pro or something and it doesnt lower the quality. I'm almost sure that a year from now there will be a 3 megapixel version, and i'll be back in hotdeals trying to figure out how to get that one cheap. Oh and one more thing , definitely buy at least a 32mb CF card for this. I personally got the 48mb, the little rubber door on the camera looks like it could break off (the one for the usb thing), so get a lexar CF card so you can just use their reader.

It's not true about the Nikons - You should see the new 880. It's also very small and has all the options from the 990 adding some pre-programmed scenes. Focussing in the dark - no problem, has the same light going off prior to take a picture.
S100 is also very nice and costs half of what the 880 costs (you have to buy separate lithium battery and charger), but 880 is the winner.

Dang and I thought the battery ate up so fast. Maybe its cuz i always switch back and forth to view my pics after I take them. Anyway, neat lil camera. I like mine too.

hans007 and others who have S100

I'm now VERY SERIOUS of getting this S100. May I know what accessories I needed for this digicam? I think additional battery is a must, right? How long the original battery will last? (eg. how many pictures can we take with the battery?)
Please give me the list of accessories. Thank you! I'm very tight on my budget now as the xmas shopping made me poor :(

Even better deal. Get staples to pricematch and then stack coupons. Use $40 off $150, $25 off $75, and $30 off $150 to bring it down to about $320 after tax.

The Canon sounds neat.. I also disagree with the bad words on the Nikon,
I got a coolpix 950 for about 400$ after rebate (thanks anandtech)..
IT is a VERY good camera, has red-eye flash, no prob there..
focuses in complete darkness.. has a MACRO that goes down to inches..
(not very many others have that) you could show detail and scratches
on a 'quarter coin'.
It is sorta complex tho in manual mode, because of all the diff,
shutter speed/apeture, etc. settings., but a very capable camera.
I might pick up the S100 just for its sheer size tho..
IT could be my TAKE anywhere easily camera.. and the Nikon would
be my TAKE when you want the BEST shot, camera.

Well, I have one from the mpsuperstore deal as well.

As far as accessories I got an extra battery (supposedly lasts about 70-80 pictures using the lcd) and bigger CF cards. The 4x lexars with jumpshot cable should still be cheap at computers4sure.

I feel the same way as stfu, I take this thing everywhere. I have taken as many pictures in the 3 weeks that I've had this as I did in the last year with a 35mm.
It really does fit in your pocket, but it sure looks funny mounted on a tripod.
Amazing engineering on the this thing, other than the usb cover. Very solid.
I wish they had put a little more filling in the batteries though.
They feel like they weigh 2 ounces. Doesn't quite feel like $50 worth of battery.

I also agree with cejay, the nikons are very good cameras.
I can't wait to see their next models.
The Canon G1 also looks really good for an upscale consumer camera.

I thought about the pricematch at staples..
but they would prob only match the 398$ price..
and CHARGE you what the overnite shipping was..
regardless of their shipping being free.
OR does staples do free shipping when other sites have it?
(or they just match it down to that and put the shipping into
the price matched)
So.. instead of 368 (after 30$ coupon).. you would prob be
398-40 (358) then add tax.. and overnite shipping (14?? or so)
and you are WAY past the price offered EASILY by BUY.com.
BUT, let me know if any was succesful with the Staples match and stack above..
I might go that route, even tho i got the one from buy.com just now..
(I could fleabay it) and buy the other, sigh.. I thought of Staples
right as I submitted the order, o well.

Nikon has a flimsy (easily broken plastic hinge) cover for their compact flash.. and the Canon S100 apparently has a flimsy breakble USB cover..
SEEMs odd that these people cant put a real metal hinge on something that
is taken OFF and on daily, etc.
Luckily I have a usb sandisk compact flash reader (19$), and it works
great.. just like another hard disk in Winblows 98. I'll use my
64mb CF from my Nikon for the Canon. Heck, I might even forget
to use my Nikon anymore (maybe special occasions).
Too bad this canon isn't 3.3 megapixels. sigh. They will prob. release
that one next. (canon S1000?) heh

the CCD on it is 1/2.7" so there is not gonna be a 3 mp CCD for it till probably late next year, since its hard to make CCDs that small. Most 3 megapixel CCDs are 1/1.7 or 1/1.8 inch. Accesorries i recommend, get the $15 soft case (not worth looking around for this, you really cant save on it, just get it at ritz camera, its around $15). Get a 48mb lexar card with jumpshot (80 pics at the 1600x1200 fine res, just about as many as the camera can take with LCD on with the battery). The jumpshot will make it so you wont need to use the little USB door that seems like it can break off. If you use it a lot, pick up a spare battery somewhere, but i didnt find i really need it, the battery recharges in 2 hours anyways. Also the CF door hinge isn't whats cheap, its the door itself, made out of pretty cheap feeling plastic (kinda sucks since the rest of the cam is metal). Anyways you shouldn't crack it or anything unless you drop the camera, which isn't something you should do anyways. Other than that, i think you are good, just the camera, the case, and a CF card (the 8mb is nearly useless) .

whoever says that the g1 is a "upscale consumer" camera, i dont think so , its prosumer, the s20 at the most would be a consumer one (same CCD). Anyways, the nikon 950 has a better macro than the s100 (1" instead of 4"), but in the $400 range (with coupons anyways), i'd buy the s100 (which i did), since its smaller and you'll get more use, the 950 and s100 are totally different cameras, i know i'd never take the 950 around with me as its too big, i used to have a fuji mx1200 and well that was too big. Also the 950 doesnt have a usb port (i guess this doesnt matter if you get a lexar jumpshot).

Also the best reason for getting the elph is people wont think you are a freak like you would be with a 950. Sure its cool looking, but it doesnt look like a digital camera, so you dont look like a total wierdo (especially if you use the optical viewfinder). Lastly though people complain about the battery life, i was able to take 235 pics with some use of the LCD (not all the time, but i used it maybe on 10% of the shots, and some reviewing also) over a 4 day period on one charge of the battery.

The USB/video cover is just a little piece of rubber, with one corner stuck inside a hole.
I have the lexar usb enabled cf cards, so I never use the port.

I really don't think they will go to 3.3 megapixels any time too soon.
I've read the CCD is smaller than in most cameras.
Also I imagine the optics and autofocus would have a hard time getting 3.3 mp worth of sharpness.

True the g1 is "prosumer".

I guess I'm used to the photo-snobs at work who won't call anything pro that isn't SLR.

Thanks for all your opinions. I'm getting the S100 :)

I already have 136MB of CF cards. All I need is a case and additional battery (Sometimes, I take a lot of pictures in a day and don't have time to recharge, even a short 2 hours).
