Looks like a battery hog.... 4AA

I'm also going to gripe about the size cause I'm hooked on the smaller powershot series that you can take anywhere.

Having said those two things, this camera truly looks awesome. I've been wanting a camera with great digital zoom for ages, but nothing out there offers more than 6x for a decent price. I can't wait to see what deals we'll be able to get in the next 10 months.

Batteries....get 4 x AA NiMH. Not an issue. Size...its small for a 10X with IS! There is no such thing as a "great digital zoom". I assume you meant great optical zoom. I also like small cameras (have an S400), but there is only so much you can squeeze into a package that small. No way you are getting 20 - 380mm with IS into one of them.

I'd much rather have a camera that uses AA's than a proprietary battery pack. I have four sets of 2200 mAH NIMH's, AA power is not a problem.

I wouldn't buy this, however, my next camera will be a 6+ megapixel DSLR.

The missing normal AF lamp that Canon has always had is puzzling. 3.2 MP is a bit on the low side, but is still adequate for 8 x 10+ prints. I wouldn't doubt that a 4 MP version comes out later like A70/A80 did.

I'm personally not so sold on DSLR. Pretty expensive once you add in lens costs, and carrying around that much stuff is a pain. I like the idea of a camera with a versatile fixed lens. I'm still leaning toward the Minolta A1 unless I see something new that would be better. So far, I dont.

That is very odd. Canon has included an AF assist lamp on almost all of their cameras recently. In fact, they've made it a standard, and competitors have often been criticized for not including them. Now they're leaving it off of a $499 camera?

Interestingly, the Pro1 also lacks an AF assist lamp. To me that is unconscionable in a $999 camera, and I am at a loss to explain it.

I read a little over at DPReview, and many people think that the camera has purposely been crippled (it also lacks firewire/USB 2.0 and RAW mode) to leave room for an higher-end model. Others think that the AF system and/or IR Ranging and/or zoom-oriented nature of the camera precludes the inclusion of the AF Assist.

Honestly, I'm more inclined to believe the former than the latter. :(

Agreed - when I bought my camera in January I went specifically out of my way to avoid one that takes a battery pack. If I'm on vacation and run out of power and happen to use a BP I'm screwed. 4 X NiMH will last forever anyway.
Yeah I know, we need minimum 4 megapixel in a new camera these days...
Well if you want a 4 MP+ with 10X optical it's going to cost you. Unless you're making large prints extra megapixels are really a waste of time anyway (though they do allow for some cropping vs. a 3 mp image).

the cost here goes to the lens.... the oly 2100 (same lens as the old pro 90 IS.. was a pretty popular camera. I almost got one :) It's a shame it doesn't have a littlte more in the MP, but it has it's market.

I personally am waiting until I have money to afford a dSLR...
