Not as big as an SLR, more flexable lens than SLR with a decent range stabilized zoom, better cost than SLR, hot shoe with TTL support.

i think it is an slr

SLR = Single Lens Reflex.

One optical path (S) goes through the lens (L) into viewfinder via mirror (R).

SLR the Pro1 is not.

This is marketed as a "Professional's Compact". Compact as in not an interchangable lens DSLR. So - a direct comparison to the 300D is irrelevant. Note the Compact size.

The Pro1 is not Image Stabilized (IS) but the Powershot S1 IS is.

Canon is getting good at giving you everything you want... in two separate packages :p If they could somehow blend the best parts of these two cameras together they would have a real winning combination. This way most consumers who were going to buy one before probably still will, and some of them might even buy both. Ain't marketing grand? :D I can't complain though, because it's cameras like these that keep the cost of their DSLRs and optics low(ish).

I hope it has better flash compensation for macro shots. Canon's older cameras have a nasty habit of washing everything out.

If the flash issues are worked out, I may buy this camera. Too bad it's not a CMOS though. The colour gradients are bit noisier than Canon's CMOS cameras unfortunately.

I'm liking the Minolta A1/A2 offering better than the Pro 1. They also have 28 - 200mm, but with IS which the pro 1 lacks. You also have a choice of 5MP (A1) and 8 MP (A2). They also use a manual SLR like ring zoom instead of the push button type of the Canon.

Well, if you're referring to the built-in flash... they've never been ideal for macros anyway. You'd be better off with an external flash. The sample shots on DPReview show that the camera is compatible with the MT-24EX macro flash... that's an ideal setup but $$$$$

True enough lirion,

A lot of good stuff coming down the pipe. It seems even with these new cams however, the old adage of 'compromise' is still the fulcrum. One has IS but then lower MP. One has higher MP and a sweet lens but no IS. At least at his point in the digital evolution it seems to me that a consumer price point may be slightly out of reach if all of Canon's fine points are rolled into one package, although that's arguable. I agree, the more consumer units that are sold, the better it is for the DSLR crowd :). Somebody has to fund the technology right!?

I'm torn as to whether I'm going to upgrade workstations and home office equipement next year or stalk a 1DMKII or whatever's the rage at the time. That's a sweet beast of a camera and I'm quite sure that just having it will elevate me to god-like status in all the known world. Getting my 10D was a euphoric experience. Having a 1DMKII would be something akin to Gollum being able to keep the ring! Now that would be [golum] p r e c i o u s... [/gollum].
