That 8mpx CCD is from Sony :(

There's a couple reasons. In the quantity that they're buying them from Sony they can probably get them cheaper than they could make them themselves. Also their own factories are turning out all the larger sized CMOS that they put into their DSLR that they can sell. Even now they're having trouble keeping the 10D on the shelves. They make more money on those cameras than they do on the compact ones, so it makes good sense fiscally to buy the cheaper CCDs from Sony. It sucks, but if they made their own sensors for all their cameras they would all cost more money for us.

How much for a 300D with a comparable lens?

28 - 200mm lenses seem to run 100 - 250+... just a quick check on eBay.

So that'd be what, 800 - 1050$?

Except that you wouldn't want a 28-200 mm lens (the 300 D isn't 35 mm) - You'd want a 17 - 135 or thereabouts. There is no one lens that will offer that range. If you want a lens that would cover the wide angle range (17-28), then you're going to be looking at about $1000 for that lens alone.

300D with a 28 - 200mm STABILIZED lens would be A LOT more. The lens would cost more than the camera. I'm not wild about the 8MP Sony CCD either. I'm sure noise will be a big issue. Have to wait for reviews to seehow it is. I'm really leaning toward the Minolta A1. With all the new 8MP stuff coming out, it should drive the price of the A1 down a little. The other Canon, the 3.2 MP with the long zoom 380mm may be interesting if it has a hot shoe.

This is the "type" of camera I want. Not as big as an SLR, more flexable lens than SLR with a decent range stabilized zoom, better cost than SLR, hot shoe with TTL support. Ring zoom instead of the push button type is nice. I like the 2" LCD of the Canon. The Canon and Minolta offerings are pretty much there. The Minolta A1 can be had for ~ $630 right now. Prices ofthe A2, and Canon Pro 1 are unknown, for now.

this isnt an slr. slr's use mirrors to project a real image into the viewfinder. the new canon does not, neither do any other digital cameras with an lcd viewfinder.
