New Canon iP4500 replaces iP4300

I noted this a while ago and knew it was coming anyway as the iP4300 had become so hard to find anywhere - Canon's channel-clearing plan really worked this time. It has ~1300 more nozzles than the iP4300 (all the more to clog you up, said the wolf), has a few more pre-programmed paper sizes (one is credit card size) and costs about $30. more - those are the major differences I can see. No doubt it will remain the king of reasonably priced, general purpose ink jet printers though it is ever more slanted to the photo side - most other Photo printers can't do a better job.

I just had to replace the print head on my iP4300 as it had become weird. Luckily I found one on eBay for a much better price (I thought at the time) than I'd have to pay elsewhere. I'll be trying to get Canon to send me a free replacement as there is no way it should have died so soon - I've only put about 3 or 4 sets of tanks thru it. Anyway, my 4300 is now as good as ever. Hard to beat a Canon for my money.

Newegg link: (currently OOS)

Some places have it listed a couple of bucks above the "selling price" mentioned on Canon's site, while most have it priced at the full $129. Newegg's $130.54 w/ quick shipping is about as good as it gets right now. Amazon has it in stock at $129. with free, slow-boat shipping.

PS: While we're discussing printers, I see that HP has released at least one model that can print on CD/DVD disks. Has Epson's patent expired or did HP license from them? Maybe Canon will start selling their complete printers here soon .bh.

Thanks for the news,my Canon i865 is still going strong after years and years of use,I only use cheap generic cartridges and my printer is more then happy with them, when the time comes to replace it I'm looking at 6700 model.

FYI I use these carts,UK only.

I thought I'd report back that I had no problem getting a replacement printhead from Canon under warranty, but they don't cost anywhere near as much as even a head for a model with far fewer nozzles cost a couple years ago. The one for this iP4300 is only $34.69 direct from Canon (+ shipping, of course). But I ought to be covered for a good while with this head I bought and the spare coming from Canon.

This just in: They shipped the replacement by Next Day even though they knew I had already bought a replacement which was working fine. Great! (of course, YMMV).

The iP4200 replaced the iP4000 and the iP4300 in turn replaced the 4200 then on to the 4500. But they aren't really total replacements as they lack the parallel port that the 4000 had, IIRC, and they aren't nearly as sturdily built. The iP3000 I had was more rugged than these new units. The 4300 and up have about twice the nozzles of the 4000 for a little bit better photo printing and slightly crisper text, but you pay a bit in speed. Plus you have to deal with the chipped tanks... If I had a 4000, I'd make it last as long as possible. I think you can still sell good working used ones for more than original price - I see one new one there asking $225. - I think that's $75. over original. Not bad...

Thank you very much. It looks better than my old BJC-6000 (still working but in the package box looking for new home).

Hmm, i noticed that, but quite a while ago.
I've been selling HP/Canons with the DVD/CD print capability.

So i did a little looking.

Seems like Canadians are getting the good stuff for once, but no such love for Americans.

Look at what Canon sells here in Canada w/ the DVD/CD tray for printing:
iP6700D
http://canon.ca/english/index-...67&sgid=20&gid=2&ovr=1
iP5300
http://canon.ca/english/index-...11&sgid=20&gid=2&ovr=1
iP4300
http://canon.ca/english/index-...89&sgid=20&gid=2&ovr=1

Now check the US details for the same printers:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consu...dexAct&fcategoryid=117

There's also the HP D5160 of course.
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc...?jumpid=reg_R1002_CAEN

And US link to said printer (retains its DVD/CD print functions): http://www.shopping.hp.com/web...0Printer&lang=en&cc=us

So obviously other companies are allowed to manufacture them.

But Canon prefers Canadians 😉

Or there's something alot more legally complicated going on.

I'm a bit confused zepper - how does the ip4500 fit into the line with the ip6700d ? Also are the new hp on par or better than the canon ?

Hum - it looks like the 6700d is more for pure photo (lacks dedicated black but has more colour) and the ip4500 is for mixed.

Hey you, 😉

The 6700D is NOT a general-purpose printer, it is a true PHOTO printer (I know, they call the 4000 series "photo"printers too, but they have a pigmented black specifically for text and are much faster at text than the true photo printers, many of their nozzles are dedicated to the pigmented black, and the text looks crisper too) that has six or more ink colors. The true photo printers will also have features that make it easier to print directly from cameras, etc. like LCD displays, Flash card slots, etc. You may see some improvement in photo printing over the 4000 series, but it would be very subtle.

So to put it simply, they are in different categories. You buy one or the other based on what is more important for you and what compromises on either side you are willing to make.

I may have asked this before but what would be the easiest way to refill iP4200 carts 🙂? New color carts are $15 each 🙁.

yes, epson has the dvd printing patent, but canon backdoored it anyway. EVERY pixma (even us models) can print on cd's. just pop off that plastic piece that covers the hole, get the right tray and enable the printer through the service config. i do it with my 5200 all day long, it works awesome.

i just found an ip5000 on ebay for $150!! these are the best printers because of the cheap ink. the i850's are goin for less then $100 too, and if you dont need cd printing the i850's are tops!!

Sonic,
. I buy the cloned tanks from SwiftInk.com (self-appointed "Ink Seller to the Stars" here on Anandtech) and transplant the chips. They give you an instruction sheet on doing the transplant. Check for their frequent specials (usually 30% off on Canon tanks) for us ATers in the Hot Deals section and as good deals over on Heatware (currently 15% off there - no current deal on the AT forums).

Call them up and find out how much your print head is - I found out the one for mine was much less than I expected.

bulkinkjetcarts.com for cheap ink. using them for years now with great luck. the cheap photo paper is very good too.

and atlanticinkjet.com for good quality ink. they even have recycled chipped cannon ink now, for $7 a color for our chipped pixmas.

bulkinkjetcarts doesn't even have compatibles for the iP4200 and up and you get to pay at least twice as much for a supposedly "reset" chip. This is the first I've heard that that was even possible - I'd be skeptical until proven.

.bh.

nobody has compatibles that plug in and work for the 4200. or the 5200 and so on. atlanticinkjet sells recycled carts, and i do admit i dont know if the reset chips work, but they claim they do and they are a reputable company.

Why don't they offer the tanks where you transplant your own chips? Can't make any easy money on them?

still seems like too much of a pain in the ass to me. i just want cheap carts that drop right in. thats why im on a quest to find a second ip5000 for about $150 or less. i just found one but it had to go to my mother for she is in dire need of a printer!

ps- is there a way to just tape or glue the chips right into the printer itself, so all those blank carts would just pop in and out?

No, but Cartridge World was suppose to begin selling reset carts at half the cost of OEM carts.

well thats fine and dandy but that still means what a $30 set of ink for the chipped printers? no, thank you, ill just get that ip5000 and replace a set of ink for $7....

I was just at my nearest Staples and they were clearancing the iP4300. They had one NIB and one floor demo unit going for around half of what the new iP4500 goes for (IOW, less than the retail price for a new set of OEM ink tanks). Good luck hunting - where is/as is... They also had the new iP3500 there but not the iP4500 yet. the 3500 looks nice. Lacks the photo black of the 4000 line. My similar iP3000 served me fine for several years - very low price.

Looking for empty, refillable tanks for iP4200 and up - anyone know of any except those ones from Australia on eBay. Anyone selling those here?
