New Camera & New rechargeable Batteries

Canon A540 digital camera, new rechargeable batteries. I charged the batteries for 16 hours. When I put the batteries in the camera it showed that the batteries were weak. I took about 10 pics and the batteries died. I recharged them again for 12 hours and same thing happens. I tried different rechargable batteries, same thing. Can someone tell me whats going on? Batteries are NI-MH 2000mAh. I put new alkaline batteries in and they worked fine. Why are rechargables 1.25 volts and alkalines 1.5 volts?
