WASHINGTON - The rules under which telemarketers have to play by in the United States get a little tighter beginning Thursday.
People whose phones have Caller ID will have to see the name of a company and a phone number they can call back whenever they receive a call from a telemarketer. Currently, most calls from companies trying to sell stuff over the phone show up as "unknown name."
The change is part of the rules that set up the do-not-call registry in 2003. It enables consumers to block certain telemarketers from calling. Telemarketing companies were given additional time to install the technology needed to display their names and numbers.

The do-not-call registry contains more than 56 million phone numbers. It's been in place since October. The telemarketing industry fought the do-not-call registry, but supported the Caller ID requirement.
