New California condor hatchling today!

In case you're wondering, mom regurgitates a bit of digested carrion into her mouth and the chick reaches in a pulls stuff out. In the screen capture, baby in pulling something stringy out of mom's mouth.

California condors are some fugly birds. It's wonderful to see them in the wild though.

I got lucky one time and stopped on the side of the highway 1 while they were soaring right next to the pull out. Up close they looked big enough to pick you up and take you to their nest.

Shorty better be careful when he's in that area... then again, maybe he's never been "taken to their nest". He might enjoy that.

Forest fire burning in the nest area, area surrounding nest tree expected to burn today; so far baby is doing okay. Send positive thoughts.
