Hi guys,
Now that sandy bridge is out i am thinking of finally getting an upgrade to my 3 year old PC.
Here are my old specs:

CPU intel E8400 @ 3.6
Mobo BFG 680i Sli Mobo
Ram 4 GIG 800mhz
Vga ATI 4870x2
HDD 500GB Sata 2 7200rpm 32MB Buffer
PSU Corsair 650W TX Series
Case Coolermaster Elite

I was wondering if i can keep some parts of my PC and get some new ones in order to save some money.
I am looking to get Intel i5 2500k and a compatible mobo and ram. My goal is to achieve atleast 75% performance gain from my current setup.
What do you guys suggest that i should hold on to from my current setup and what new parts should i get.
My budget is something around £400. But it can be extended by selling my existing PC parts.

Feel free to post your opinion.
cheers :)

Here are my old specs:

CPU intel E8400 @ 3.6 i5-2500k
Mobo BFG 680i Sli Mobo Asrock P67 Extreme4
Ram 4 GIG 800mhz 8gb gskill ddr3-1600, or mushkin or corsair, whichever has the best deal - important, must be 1.5v
Vga ATI 4870x2 2x GTX460 1GB unless you want to stick with ATI?
HDD 500GB Sata 2 7200rpm 32MB Buffer Keep this and if your budget allows, add an SSD such as 60 to 120GB Vertex 2
PSU Corsair 650W TX Series You can probably keep this
Case Coolermaster Elite keep it

I was wondering if i can keep some parts of my PC and get some new ones in order to save some money.

Not sure what prices are like for you. Do any of your online stores do price matching?

edit: ehhh it might not be likely that you can get all that for 400. You could hang onto your 4870x2 until later, I'm not sure how much of an upgrade 2 GTX 460's would be.

how much could you sell the 4870x2 for?

You want 75% more performance from your GPU or GPU's as well ? I don't see how your going to do this. A 4870X2 is equal mostly to a HD 5870 in games where Crossfire scales well. Which is faster than a GTX 460. If you want that much more performance....you may be approaching on SLI 570 territory or something like 6870/6950 Crossfire.

And mainly around here, you'll hear that future proofing really doesn't exist.

Indeed future proofing does not really exist. If you we're to upgrade to sandy bridge probably the only things you could carry over from your current build would be the case, PSU. HDDs, and optical drives. Really your system should run modern games quite well. If I were you I would hold on to your money for now. Maybe when Ivy bridge comes out sell your current system and make a whole new one. Maybe if you can find a core 2 quad cheap enough it would be worth dropping into that system. Otherwise there's not much you can do without a full overhaul.

Unless you're playing some really heavily CPU-limited games, there is no way that Sandy Bridge by itself is going to give you a 75% boost. Hell, you're probably looking at upgrading the GPUs to at least 6950 Crossfire to see those sorts of gains.

EDIT: D'oh, MentalIllness beat me to it!
